“Wear your learning like your watch, in a private pocket; and do not pull it out and strike it merely to show that you have one”

smile

to return to the first saying, watches are on the way out-apparently!

JO4 Thu 27-Sept-12 12:38:38

And "Keep your tents separate and your hearts together".

JO4 Thu 27-Sept-12 12:36:51

I like "Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof".

gracesmum Thu 27-Sept-12 10:14:07

Something along the lines of "it is better to remain silent and risk others thinking you are a fool, than to speak and leave them in no doubt" grin

Greatnan Thu 27-Sept-12 09:58:03

Grossi - from the same author, I think - the Peter's Principle. People rise to their level of incompetence. So all CEO's are probably unfitted for the job!

Grossi Thu 27-Sept-12 09:54:36

I like "housework expands to fit the time available to do it"! smile

Greatnan Thu 27-Sept-12 09:45:33

Perhaps he panicked - I have been known to forget well-known words in stressful situations.

On the wearing your learning lightly point, I wonder if David Cameron pretended he didn't know what magna carta meant on David Letterman last night.

He must have done at least four years of latin at his kind of schools and they're not exactly difficult words.

So we have to believe either that he is a bit thick and has a dodgy memory, or that he is a fibber?

Greatnan Thu 27-Sept-12 09:19:49

I had to look up GIFs - still not sure I understand what they are!

I like 'Before you do unto others make sure they want to be done unto the same way that you do'. Not pithy, but true!

Knowsley Thu 27-Sept-12 09:09:01

I've updated an old one.

Beware Geeks sharing GIFs.

Nit Picker !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL LOL LOL

absentgrana Fri 31-Aug-12 12:16:29

Oh I don't know Nonu. It's no good pushing a door that will open only when pulled. smile

Nonu Thu 30-Aug-12 20:17:41

Absentgrana, I believe that when one door shuts another one opens , all you have to do is push it smile

Nonu Thu 30-Aug-12 20:14:04

Being nice to people is a really good idea

fine words ,but they butter no parsnips

the harder I work the luckier I become

Remenber the rainbows, forget the thunderstorms

Ageing can be engaging

What doesn"t kill you you makes you stronger

We"re for a good time , not a long time

Don"t stop doing things just because you"re older

Money isn"t everything , but it rates up there with oxygen

Never a dull moment

xx

JO4 ...I don't see how my joke was offensive. I didn't call anyone daft or suggest they only had half a brain as you did.

I think you are seeing things in my posts which are not there. If I choose at some time in the future to offend someone I will make sure that the person involved knows they are meant to be offended and others know it is not aimed at them.

absentgrana Thu 30-Aug-12 07:33:16

My father used to say when one door closes another one shuts.

Anagram Wed 29-Aug-12 22:38:49

grin Ariadne !

Ariadne Wed 29-Aug-12 22:35:39

ana or -"would some gift to others gie, to see myself as I see me."!

JO4 Wed 29-Aug-12 21:35:02

matson is that your favourite saying, or were you giving advice there? confused

Anagram Wed 29-Aug-12 21:31:44

"O wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!"

Robbie Burns - and my absolute favourite!

Had to search a bit to find the Scots version - I just think it sounds so much better than the English 'translation'!

Bags Wed 29-Aug-12 21:29:08

Nicer way of putting it than "If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing, full-stop".

Innit?

Bags Wed 29-Aug-12 21:27:37

My dad used to say "If a thing's worth doing it's worth doing badly". I always liked that.

Butternut Wed 29-Aug-12 19:53:17

J I've never heard of that saying before. I really like it. smile

matson Wed 29-Aug-12 19:01:15

turn the other cheek !
