“Wear your learning like your watch, in a private pocket; and do not pull it out and strike it merely to show that you have one”

smile

Anagram Wed 29-Aug-12 14:34:02

Why would you want to strike it? confused

Mamie Wed 29-Aug-12 14:35:06

If you strike it , does it stop working? hmm

absentgrana Wed 29-Aug-12 14:36:44

How many people have pocket watches these days? Nurses wear their watches on their chests and most other people wear them on the wrists.

The trouble with wise saws and sayings is that they often relate to things that no longer apply in the modern age.

But yes, of course, showing off is never called for and you're thought is wise. smile

It's a very old saying you daft lot! hmm

'Striking' it meant opening it up (pocket watch)

It does still apply so long as you've got half a brain.

My favourite saying to someone who is really annoying.

"You'd make a parson throw his good book into the fire!"

Just in case the language is too old fashioned here's some definitions smile

par·son/ˈpärsən/Noun:
1.A beneficed member of the clergy; a rector or a vicar.
2.Any member of the clergy, esp. a Protestant one.

good book/Noun:
Bible: the sacred writings of the Christian religions

fire/fī(ə)r/Noun:
Combustion or burning, in which substances combine chemically with oxygen from the air and typically give out bright light, heat, and smoke.

Try to be a bit more offensive vampirequeen.

You're not quite making it yet. hmm

matson Wed 29-Aug-12 19:01:15

turn the other cheek !

Butternut Wed 29-Aug-12 19:53:17

J I've never heard of that saying before. I really like it. smile

Bags Wed 29-Aug-12 21:27:37

My dad used to say "If a thing's worth doing it's worth doing badly". I always liked that.

Bags Wed 29-Aug-12 21:29:08

Nicer way of putting it than "If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing, full-stop".

Innit?

Anagram Wed 29-Aug-12 21:31:44

"O wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!"

Robbie Burns - and my absolute favourite!

Had to search a bit to find the Scots version - I just think it sounds so much better than the English 'translation'!

JO4 Wed 29-Aug-12 21:35:02

matson is that your favourite saying, or were you giving advice there? confused

Ariadne Wed 29-Aug-12 22:35:39

ana or -"would some gift to others gie, to see myself as I see me."!

Anagram Wed 29-Aug-12 22:38:49

grin Ariadne !

My father used to say when one door closes another one shuts.

vampirequeen Thu 30-Aug-12 11:05:24

JO4 ...I don't see how my joke was offensive. I didn't call anyone daft or suggest they only had half a brain as you did.

I think you are seeing things in my posts which are not there. If I choose at some time in the future to offend someone I will make sure that the person involved knows they are meant to be offended and others know it is not aimed at them.

Being nice to people is a really good idea

fine words ,but they butter no parsnips

the harder I work the luckier I become

Remenber the rainbows, forget the thunderstorms

Ageing can be engaging

What doesn"t kill you you makes you stronger

We"re for a good time , not a long time

Don"t stop doing things just because you"re older

Money isn"t everything , but it rates up there with oxygen

Never a dull moment

xx

Nonu Thu 30-Aug-12 20:17:41

Absentgrana, I believe that when one door shuts another one opens , all you have to do is push it smile

absentgrana Fri 31-Aug-12 12:16:29

Oh I don't know Nonu. It's no good pushing a door that will open only when pulled. smile

Nonu Fri 31-Aug-12 12:18:57

Nit Picker !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL LOL LOL

jeni Fri 31-Aug-12 13:00:16

I've updated an old one.

Beware Geeks sharing GIFs.

Greatnan Thu 27-Sept-12 09:19:49

I had to look up GIFs - still not sure I understand what they are!

I like 'Before you do unto others make sure they want to be done unto the same way that you do'. Not pithy, but true!

On the wearing your learning lightly point, I wonder if David Cameron pretended he didn't know what magna carta meant on David Letterman last night.

He must have done at least four years of latin at his kind of schools and they're not exactly difficult words.

So we have to believe either that he is a bit thick and has a dodgy memory, or that he is a fibber?
