Does it feel like the beginning of the year?

I have a "start of term" feel. I'm not a teacher and never have been, but I still have the habit of thinking in terms of the academic year rather than the calendar one. This feels like the time for new projects much more than January.

I admit I do still have one DD at university (although in fact she's not going back for several weeks) - but I wondered if other gransnetters' years were shaped like mine.

When I was at university I used to have a diary that began in September and went through to August. It would still make more sense.

flopsybunny, thought it was just me! The 'new begining' feeling of a new term stayed with me a long time, perhaps because I was employed in pre-schools until about 15 years ago, but yes September still feels like the begining of something whilst January always seems a bit of a damp squib. Also I love to see the Autumn/Winter fashions come in.....the colours always appeal to me more than summer stuff. I can get quite excited about choosing a winter coat whilst summer things never really do it for me.

Yes, I have two new year starts, academic and January 1st. For so many years, it's been school, college, university and now teachers in the family, and timing uniforms and new school shoes after the summer hols has influenced so much. If I had a choice between an academic diary and Jan to Dec, I would choose the former. Fortunately, it doesn't matter now I've retired! smile

how nice to know one is not alone in feeling that September is the time to start enterprises. It's probably because lots of clubs and other activities have a break in august. So even people who are not connected to the academic world will get this feeling of gathering forces for a new start.

I haven't given up on summer yet.

September has always been my favourite month, when I feel reinvigorated. I assumed that was because my Birthday is in early September (9 months after the Christmas/New Year Celebrations!) - I had not thought of it in terms of School Years.

For me September heralds harvesting month in the garden, bonus sunny days, clearing out the wardrobe, new autumn/winter clothes, time to stock up on logs, start new projects. Yes, truely the start of the 'Season of Mists and Mellow Fruitfulness' - Love it smile

It did when I got up.
I was full of the things I was going to do today.
Instead I've spent most of the morning on Gransnet.
Now it's time for brew

Always start a weight loss diet in September! School year has always regulated my life and continues to do so! But experience tells me first few weeks of the Autumn Term often bring some lovely weather..so JO4 you might be in luck with summer! DGD1 announced this morning that today was the first day of autumn. It was her birthday yesterday and she likes the idea of a summer birthday!

I still use an academic diary - it fits most areas of my life, with teacher DC, student DGC, and the Rotary year runs from July to July.

Even after four years, I still feel so happy that I'm not going back, much as I loved my job, and I don't have to be on the road at 6.00 tomorrow morning!

I have to remember two lots of academic years - UK and New Zealand.
I have had diaries that ran from Jan to Dec, Sep - Aug (when I was teaching) and April - March (when I was a tax inspector). The odd tax year in the UK causes my French tax office no end of problems, even though I work out the pro-rata income for Jan - Dec for them.
I am hoping for some golden days this week, as I have a very important visitor!

Yes, it is linked with new starts, new school, new class, new teacher, new winter uniform, the end of summer, my least favourite season, and the start of autumn, my favourite. The return of cool weather and warm clothes invigorates me for a new start

Not me! But then I don't usually know what date it is anyway. Isn't that the point of retirment??? [grin}

Maybe it will when GS is old enough to start school.
