We started learning to play bridge in 2011 with another couple and now play quite regularly. We always make an afternoon/evening of it and include a simple meal - its so interesting and very good for keeping the grey matter lively. You can learn to play bridge online. There are some very good and helpful videos on youtube.

I used to play cribbage and bezique when my ex was around and I can't remember how to play either!

I love playing cards, especially crib/cribbage. I think cards are great for either being a thinking game such as crib or fun such as chase the ace. Does require a 'glass of something' to make it a sociable time, that's why a holiday game is a must. Hubby loves cards too so I guess that does make a big difference.

I love dominoes too but I am rubbish at darts or pool anything that requires a good eye.

For some reason my parents and both grandparents houses contained cribbage boards and as a small child, not having the slightest idea what it was or what it was for, I became convinced that it was something arcane that all married couples got given when they got married and was a necessary part of any marital home.

My parents and maternal grandmother never played cribbage so why they had cribbage boards heaven knows. In my mid teens I spent some of my school holidays with my paternal grandparents and discovered that part of their pre-bedtime routine was a hot drink and a round or two of cribbage. Meanwhile I now possess my parents cribbage board - and I cant play it either.

Yes, I'd like to learn to play bridge. What is the name of the female journalist who is now a top bridge player?

DH always refused to teach me to play cribbage - he said I'd never pick it up (he's very good); but a friend taught me and now I'm pretty good. I taught my son in law to play last year. We used to play cards with friends a lot when we were younger - whist (whatever happened to whist drives?), Newmarket, chase the ace - but the only time we play now is at Christmas. We play Donkey and Happy Families with our 5 year old though grin!

Thanks Oldjohn, I'll have a look once I've settled back into routine grin

Oldjohn Sat 08-Sept-12 20:41:33

Mrshat there's a site called acbl which teaches the basics for free but local bridge clubs here don't welcome beginners

mrshat Sat 08-Sept-12 20:35:32

Me too Old John but lessons are hugely expensive. Dear OH promised to teach me but I am still waiting ...................grin

I'd love to learn to play bridge.

I did teach my first husband to pay cribbage or maybe he already knew – it was a long time ago. We took a cribbage board and pack of cards with us when holidaying on a Greek Island. It is a unique card game and absolutely fascinated everyone who saw us playing.

I used to play Bézique as well and I think I still have a pack of Bézique cards somewhere. I don't know anyone else who plays.

I still have my Dad's old cribbage board with the little pegs tucked into a compartment at one end. He and I used to play a lot and now my son(aged 50) plays quite a lot.

My mum was a smart player of cribbage having been taught by a much older brother when she was quite a young child. The game is rather more complex and subtle than it seems at first. In her last years, living in our house, she still enjoyed a game with me. A dear friend had bought large-print cards to enable her to see what she had in her hand, but she simply lost the plot. I always did the scoring and I remember several occasions when I pegged my scores backwards so that she would have the pleasure of winning – and she still lost. But thanks Mum, for teaching me the game. smile

Hubby and I played crib a lot many years ago, but can`t remember how to play now. We don`t play cards as often as we used to, but when we do it tends to be Nomination.

Absent; how strange...I've been sorting out books with a view to actually throwing some away; they've been in a bin next to my desk and I'd just decided not to throw them away but take them up to Barter Books at Alnwick [so they can do the throwing out if they feel the book will not find a new home] and, next to me as I type is a book called 'All About Cribbage' by Douglas Anderson. It's quite a sweet little book, and is now going back on the shelf. The game itself looks far too complicated for me. I'm wondering if card games are due to make a comeback? It's something I used to enjoy but haven't done for many a year.

Soupy Tue 04-Sept-12 15:15:50

Oooh yes. Newmarket, Racing Demon - love'em.

When on holiday camping we used to play a lot of crib and in fact we had a game against the children on Chr******mas Day and they moaned when DH and I won.

Nonu Tue 04-Sept-12 12:35:37

Mine too ! we have also got an old "Shove Halfpenny" board which was DH "s dads , which they love as well . smile

AlieOxon Tue 04-Sept-12 12:27:26

I like to play rummy with my youngest grandson - but when he loses he always wants to play something else!

absentgrana Tue 04-Sept-12 11:48:07

I used to play cribbage with my mother but I have no one to play it with now as Mr absent isn't interested. We don't play any card games but do occasionally have the odd session of backgammon or chess.

Nonu Tue 04-Sept-12 11:17:21

Well start at Christmas , they might enjoy smile

Anagram Tue 04-Sept-12 11:11:28

Ooh, I used to love Newmarket - haven't played it for years.

Nonu Tue 04-Sept-12 11:09:36

I also like cards at Christmas , my favourite is Newmarket , I suppose board games have taken their place .

nanaej Tue 04-Sept-12 10:50:46
