Awful murders near Annecy in the French Alps

We have often been in this area on holidays and I find it absolutely horrific to imagine this dreadful incident. It is a beautiful, peaceful region with little crime and now this slaughter of a family has desecrated that. What is the world coming to? Those two little girls, one now in a medically induced coma, the other terrified out of her 4 year old wits, will be damaged for life.

It must be near Greatnan too - she will be distressed I know.

I will have to have another look, Mamie - I have been busy entertaining Anno so I have not been keeping an eye on the French papers.

Are you sure about that Greatnan? I read on the Guardian website about lack of coverage in the French press, but I don't think it is true. It seemed to be on every French national front page that I looked at yesterday, including the local French paper here on the Spanish border. Of course, the speculation isn't at the same level as the UK press and than heavens for that.

The murders are being given very little coverage in the French media. On the whole, the press here does not speculate in advance of a trial, the way UK newspapers do. I am sure that most of the crowds who were in Annecy on Saturday had not heard about the killings.

Pogs x

Surely Nonu was simply responding to the previous comment, that's all.

I think Nonu was just trying to balance the comments some had made re racism etc. Nothing more, nothing less.

soop Ana, me too. I didn't get it, it doesn't make sense. Well, not to me anyway wink

crimson I am dissappointed to hear that, I had hoped she would have lossed those memories.

soop and anagram she was responding to the previous post.

A friend of mine was put into an induced coma and I'm afraid to say she remembers everything that was happening around her; it left her very traumatised.

soop Sun 09-Sept-12 12:30:53

Ana...confused ...me, too.

Anagram Sun 09-Sept-12 12:18:42

Yes? It just says 'Why wouldn't they?'. Who?

AlisonMA Sun 09-Sept-12 12:00:28

Anagram see nonu's post at 22.49 last night.

Anagram Sun 09-Sept-12 11:58:20

Why wouldn't they what? confused

AlisonMA Sun 09-Sept-12 11:36:16

Didn't they find skid marks? That would surely indicaate they were run off the road. I agree with nonu why wouldn't they?

That poor 4 year old. I still think the police should have found her sooner as it is probable that there was a car seat/booster cushion to give them a clue that a child was there. I can't imagine how she will ever get over it, totally traumatised. I hope that the older one will have been sedated so long that it will have had an affect on her memory even if that makes it harder for the police to find the perpetrator. I would prefer her to remember less about it if possible.

Apparently two mobile phones have been found in the car. These might provide some sort of clue about why they were where they were and if they were meeting someone.

crimson Sun 09-Sept-12 09:33:05

If it was a dispute over land then they would have made sure both of the children were killed and, would surely have known how many children were in the car. However, if the car doors were locked and the youngest child was obscured by the other passengers the killers would have had to leave before someone else came along. Don't understand why the older child was treated in a different way to the other victims; maybe they ran out of bullets? A lot of it doesn't add up. I feel so sorry for the family of the cyclist, although I read that they haven't ruled out the fact that he may have ben the one targetted and the family got in the way [although it seems highly unlikely].

Greatnan Sun 09-Sept-12 06:34:44

It seems hard for them not to be with relatives, but until all suspicions are removed that is not possible. Apparently, the French and English police are co-operating well, even though they work in very different ways. The French media would not have reported the allegations against the uncle which are entirely unproven.

That could be why they are protected by armed guards in Grenoble.

harrigran Sat 08-Sept-12 23:54:05

If this was an execution, then those poor children are in mortal danger, the perpetrators are not going to leave a witness shock

Nonu Sat 08-Sept-12 22:49:23

Why wouldn"t they !

Greatnan Sat 08-Sept-12 22:48:17

We cannot know anything for sure until the investigation is complete, but I suppose they could have followed them from England. There is not much point in speculating, I think. Whatever the truth behind the killings, the children have suffered the most awful ordeal, and I am sure most people will want to consider in a sombre and respectful manner.

Littlenellie Sat 08-Sept-12 22:28:58

I don't know if I have missed anything, but I wonder how the assassin/s new that the victims where on that road at that time..confused

Nonu Sat 08-Sept-12 20:17:06

Yes miss !

Greatnan Sat 08-Sept-12 19:57:30

To return to the serious thread - Anno and I spent a lovely day in Annecy, which was as crowded as ever with happy visitors. My first thought appears to be true - this was not a random killing, but a carefully planned and professionally executed murder. I am so sorry for the two little girls.

Nonu Sat 08-Sept-12 09:23:35
