Mirror fasting

There was an item on Today (Radio 4) this morning about women deliberately deciding never to look at themselves in the mirror in order to overcome their insecurities over their appearance. I thought this was a bit weird. Not sure how it would work.

Shop windows always show a fat lass that looks awfully like me but surely I can't be that fat and that old. Only a short time ago my family used to call me Mrs Dash because I was always hurrying somewhere.

I check to make sure my skirt isn't tucked in my knickers! It has been known. Oh, yes, it has been known.

My daughter often says to me "Shoulders back. Hump in"! hmm

JO4 Thu 13-Sept-12 17:20:25

And me. I see an old lady and it takes me a little while to realise it is me. Then I have to tell myself "Stand up straight and pull your hump in"! shock

Me neither bett! I stopped looking a while ago as it was too depressing!

I worked for a nursing agency, quite a long time ago as I am 85 now. I went to one place looking after an elderly lady, we used to go for walks together, her in a wheel chair. There was one place where she used to say,''over the road please''. One day I asked her why she always liked the other side at this particular place, She pointed at the shop windows over the road, '' I once looked in there, and wondered who this old lady was, in the wheel chair, I was horrified to find it was me''.
Actually she was very good looking, as I told her. However, now I don't like looking at my reflection in shop windows .Beth

Not too much wine - neither of us are big drinkers - but as Anno does not eat meat I had to enlarge my normal repertoire a bit!

janeainsworth Wed 12-Sept-12 20:04:53

Crikey! Stuffed tomatoes with salmon fillets and no doubt plenty of wine sounds pretty social to megrin

annodomini Wed 12-Sept-12 19:46:46

Flattery! grin

Greatnan Wed 12-Sept-12 19:43:37

No, you are much better company!

annodomini Wed 12-Sept-12 19:41:02

I don't think I qualify as 'social life'!

Greatnan Wed 12-Sept-12 19:34:04

I don't think Anno cared about my lack of glamour!

janeainsworth Wed 12-Sept-12 19:25:16

I suppose if you had body dismorphic disorder the mirror-avoidance technique might be a useful part of treatment. Or anorexia.

Greatnan Wed 12-Sept-12 15:19:10

I don't believe for a minute that wanting to look the best you can, with whatever help you can get, means you are insecure. I used to really enjoy getting ready to go out and seeing the transformation take place. I just lost interest when I stopped having any social life.

harrigran Wed 12-Sept-12 15:15:36

I am fascinated by women who take a lipstick from their handbag and proceed to apply it without a mirror, if I did that I would look like Coco the clown.

getmehrt Wed 12-Sept-12 12:55:17

I look in the mirror but I find there are bits I just don't take in any more.

Who was it said that after a certain age, you have to choose between your face and your hips?

I am quite selective in what I see.

Nanadogsbody Wed 12-Sept-12 12:36:51

I use the mirror as a reality check...... hmm

Littlenellie Wed 12-Sept-12 12:21:29

Ps I am always checking in the mirror, back front sideways....vain or what..

Littlenellie Wed 12-Sept-12 12:19:51

Well looking at some of the sights around, there does seem to be a lot of
People who dont check before they go out...ooohh meow Nellie grin

Greatnan I think you should have a new name Dilligaf. grin

Got told the other day that I was NILTF...grin

janeainsworth Wed 12-Sept-12 12:11:53

Well, I care about my appearance and if that means people think I'm insecure I really don't caresmile.
I broke my wrist 10 years ago and the worst thing apart from not bring able to work (I was self employed) was trying to put my make-up on and do my hair with my left hand!
