I know I am a person of enormous refinement and sensitivity (!) but surely I am not alone in hating those labels manufacturers put at the back of the neck of jumpers etc?
They seem to be made out of recycled razor blades and sewn in with invisible fairy stitches so that unless I am very very lucky careful, I end up nicking a stitch and get a b****y hole! I use the seam ripper from my sewing machine, look over the top of the varifocals and stand by a bright light or window and it is still a struggle. Failure to do this results in raw red sore patch on back of neck and extreme irritation.
Why do they do it? Has anyone ever tried to complain (and got anywhere)??

Never thought of complaining, gracesmum, but I hate those labels as well! A lot of them seem to be sewn in with nylon thread, which irritates my neck even more, but I usually manage to remove the lot with tiny scissors and grim determination.....
If you manage to snip the end stitch it makes it easier.

Kindred spirits! DH and I are always cursing them - he says they're made out of barbed wire! And lately there's a trend towards an entire concertina file of labels in every language under the sun. But the ones at the back of the neck are the worst. So no matter how soft or gorgeous the fabric of the item of clothing may be - they st*ff it up by putting on those damn labels [gr]

harrigran Sun 07-Oct-12 10:48:42

My name is harrigran and I too suffer from this terrible curse. It doesn't matter how fine the fabric of the garment is the label will always be made of the nastiest, roughest piece of nylon they can find angry

Seams across the toes of socks are as bad, particularly at the ends of the seams, where they leave a pointy bit of sock with knobbly stitching on it. I have broad feet so my big and small toes are always fairly tight across the shoe, and they are rubbed raw.

Littlenellie Sun 07-Oct-12 10:50:04

And me ,and also irritating are the ones inside your underwear that do the same thing....delicate little soul that I am.

harrigran Sun 07-Oct-12 10:52:36

I have managed to find comfort socks Elegran they do not have raised seams on the toes. I wore a pair inside my boots on Wednesday and my feet were fine. Now I know you are going to ask me where I got them but I have already thrown the cardboard away so I can't remember.

Elegran Sun 07-Oct-12 10:55:52

I know you can get diabetic socks socks for diabetics, with no seams. I think I will have a search for them.

Hunt Sun 07-Oct-12 11:43:13

I liked 'Barbed wire ' and ' recycled razor blades'. The only annoying thing if you cut out the label is to find yourself putting the garment on back to front. If you wear your socks inside out, Elegran' the seams don't cause such a problem.

Lilygran Sun 07-Oct-12 11:53:26

It's even more annoying that they put the scratchy label in the back of the neck because somewhere else in the garment will be another label with extensive care instructions!

Marelli Sun 07-Oct-12 11:56:08

Oh yes! Me too - and why is the label always sewn in with wiry nylon thread, anyway? Oddly enough, I've found that much of the stuff from Primark and Next now has very soft tag-type labels which don't seem to be irritating at all.

M&S thermal vests don't have neck labels either - perhaps someone is actually listening to their customers at last!

jeni Sun 07-Oct-12 12:10:42

What's a thermal vest?

gracesmum Sun 07-Oct-12 12:13:00

What's a thermal vest????? Don't you get winter in the South West? I am sewn into mine on the 1st of October and DH releases me out when "May is oot"!!grin

jeni Sun 07-Oct-12 12:16:11

I hate vests since I was at school and we always had to wear them to 'prevent a chill in the kidneys'
Don't even possess one now?

Ana Sun 07-Oct-12 12:36:24

Wouldn't be without mine either, gracesmum! I have even been known to wear one between May and October if the weather warrants it!
jeni they're quite stylish nowadays, not like school vests grin

AlieOxon Sun 07-Oct-12 12:38:15

Is a thermal vest the updated version of a Liberty Bodice?

harrigran Sun 07-Oct-12 12:42:02

I wear a vest in winter and at any other time when the temperature drops. Why suffer ?

JessM Sun 07-Oct-12 12:42:43

gracesmum - just like QE 1st!!!
Heavily into layers myself. Two layers on bottom half on cold days. thermal leggings and fleece tracky bottoms. I have already worn this alluring but cosy combo at least once this winter already.

Bags Sun 07-Oct-12 12:44:04

Exactly, harri. Me too. Cotton camisoles from M&S at the mo. All clothes are thermal, aren't they? Isn't that mainly why we wear them in cool climates like ours?

Ana Sun 07-Oct-12 12:44:44

I wear the long-sleeved thermal vests - they look just like t-shirts really. Couldn't do without that extra layer in the winter, though!

gracesmum Sun 07-Oct-12 12:53:08

If I'm feeling trendy I call it a camisole, but usually it is known chez nous as a "semmet"!

crimson Sun 07-Oct-12 12:57:01

My M&S jim jams. Label right at the back. Taking it off would make it worse. The other day actually thought of complaining when I buy some more [which is soon]. What makes it worse is that my skin seems to get more sensitive as I get older. And when one works in an environment where the heating has been taken away one wears vests all the time sad.

Greatnan Sun 07-Oct-12 12:59:40

I have so far resisted the temptation to wear my Damart thermal long johns under my trousers, but once the snows come, I will be wearing my usual layers on my walks - knickers, tights, long johns, and/or leggings, thick trousers, possum socks, boots, bra, long sleeved top, fleece, waterproof jacket, scarf, woollen hat with visor (snow reflects the sun), silk inner gloves and thick ski gloves. If you think I may be a bit soft, you have never lived in a ski resort!

vampirequeen Sun 07-Oct-12 13:04:34

I hate the hanging ribbons in tops that show whenever you wear them. The choice then is cut them out and have them fall off the coathangers or leave them in and keep checking to make sure they're still hidden.
