What do your clothes say about you?

Yesterday I found myself giving sideways glances at any ladies of a certain age wearing anything which could remotely be described as purple!!
And on our way back to the station we saw lots of "girlies" up in Brum for a night out with legs up to their armpits ,vertiginous heels (and certainly no vests) looking like they were about to audition for the X factor. This morning I met a rather grand elderly-ish lady in our village shop wearing typical "no nonsense" clothes - sensible shoes, good thick tights/stockings, waterproof gilet and a very serviceable skirt of a very decent length, a bit of a social stereotype. The sort who says "It's getting cold, throw another dog on the bed" smile
And I wondered how much what we wear is a cliche - or a statement about who or what we perceive ourselves to be? I am also thinking of middle aged (or older) politicians or slebs in jeans while our grandfathers at the same age would have been in suits with hats, female slebs showing far more flesh than they ougher at their age or the ubiquitous teenage uniform of opaque tights under denim shorts,Ugg boots, big hoop earrings and long blonde hair.
What do your clothes say about you? Or do you (maybe unconsciously) dress to a stereotype?
(Willowy blonde, about 5'10 and the right side of 50 apart)

Do you mean the vests, the winceyette pyjamas and my bedsocks?
wink

Hi!
What's outdated about "special needs"? I have a number of friends who are - or is it just because they are not children and there's a new euphemism?

Today I went to Hotter and bought a pair of deep purple walking boots bright pink laces. I still find purple irresistible.

janeainsworth Thu 11-Oct-12 22:04:10

I got married in purple, in 1970.
A long cotton dress with long tight sleeves, a high neckline, frilled at the neck, wrists and hem, purple and white patterned.
I was 20 and had my hair in a Julie Driscoll style.
The ensemble was finished off with a white wide-brimmed floppy hat.
My parents wisely kept their opinions to themselves grin

You should put a photo on your profile jane that was very trendy.
45 years ago I got married in white velvet, I was 7 stone and would have blown away if it had been windy grin

janeainsworth Thu 11-Oct-12 23:08:23

I'll try Harri but scanning photos into the computer is something I haven't yet mastered[embarrassed].
The photos were all black and white, and in keeping with frugal style of my wedding, they were taken by MrA's old school friend. After the celebrations he removed the film from his camera, presented us with the cassette and when we returned from our weekend in the Lake District that was our honeymoon, spent hours in Dad's darkroom developing and printing them!

harrigran Thu 11-Oct-12 23:16:00

Snap jane our black and white photos were taken by a friend of my Dad, he ran out of film before we cut the cake. The poor man did not have a clue most of the pictures were done in a car park behind the Locarno ballroom. We too went to the Lakes for our honeymoon, married on 14th October and the hotel closed for the winter on the 16th. Nearly lost my brown suede shoes because I had kicked them under the bed, had to go racing back or it would have been easter before I could rescue them. Don't think I had too many pairs of shoes in those days.

janeainsworth Fri 12-Oct-12 11:21:26

Those were the days! Your white velvet sounds lovely harri
I'm not sure I could have faced the trauma of the big weddings favoured by most of today's young couples, even if we or my parents had had the money!

Marelli and Elegran...smile

How observant...the shoes were Per Una...off eBay, from a lady who had worn then twice and found that they pinched her as she should have bought half a size larger. The skirt [per Una] still had it's label and was unworn. Seller thought that the style "overwhemled" her. I love it. A bargain for under £10. The blouse was preworn [James Lakeland] made in Italy. It cost in the region of £7. Jacket was almost new and that was a snip at £20-ish Cannot remember the exact cost as it was purchased some time ago. The large scarf eBay new with tags under £10 inc the postage. Smaller scarf [eBay] preworn £4.75. My black tights [Tesco] were too large. They rucked around the ankle Norah Batty style. grin

If you could see the outfit worn for my daughter's wedding you would say that I was rich - but. you'd be completely wrong!! grin
Dress by Caroline Charles was not a pre-owned, pre-loved item, but actually brand spanking new (reduced from nearly £900 to only £300); green silk 'Precis' jacket (reduced to only £90); shoes (reduced to only £70) and bag (full price @ £40 hmm) from Jones Bootmaker. My outfit for son's wedding is all similarly priced and all bought in the sales.
However; what my clothes usually say about me is that I've been shopping in the charity shops. grin grin

I LOVE ebay! At the moment I'm 'watching' a few pairs of Ugg boots. They're all 'used' but will get snapped up very quickly, so I'm hoping to get a decent pair for a good price. I'd seen some in town today for £100, down from £160, but don't want to pay that much, do I! smile

gracesmum Sat 13-Oct-12 15:22:11

Ugg boots seem to lose their shape though, so are "used" ones a good idea? There are other brands (OK, so not the label) for a lot less.

Marelli Sat 13-Oct-12 15:26:58

Is that right , gracesmum? Oh you've made me think, now! Perhaps I'll need to seek out something else confused.

soop Sat 13-Oct-12 15:27:15

Marelli

Wait until the last 12 seconds before placing your bid. I always do and I usually put in an odd amount - £23.45 or £18.81...hmm Good luck with the boots. Let us know the outcome. smile

Ana Sat 13-Oct-12 15:28:59

Yes, you've only got to look at some of the girls wearing last year's Uggs, they seem to have got trodden down at one side or the other.

Marelli Sat 13-Oct-12 16:01:33

I got a lovely short cashmere dress yesterday for £4.70 (inc. PP)! It should look nice with leggings and boots! hmm

soop Sat 13-Oct-12 16:29:41

Bargain of the week Marelli...and with the legs of a ballerina, you've nowt to fret about. grin

annodomini Sat 13-Oct-12 16:36:22

I just missed out on a cashmere cardi last night. Kicked myself hard. Keeping an eye on a lovely long one. I don't like the thought of used footwear though.

soop Sat 13-Oct-12 16:46:45

anno the shoes that I buy, are those that have been worn once or twice and found to be the wrong size. I've not been disappointed yet.

Marelli Sat 13-Oct-12 16:57:22

I'm always very careful about what I buy, and have had some really good footwear. I've also sold lots of stuff on Ebay - it's can be quite exciting!

annodomini Sat 13-Oct-12 16:58:01

I've tried to sell a pair like that and no-one went for them - must try again.
I shouldn't be let out! I was making an offer for a 'buy it now' cardi and pressed the wrong button, so I have 'bought it now' - a bit more than I had intended to pay. I won't make that mistake again.
