Our village is lovely but a bit short on amenities - we managd to restart the vilage shop a year ago with help from public subscription and loans to buy a Portacabin-type building to operate out of and we had Post Offices services reinstated. But there's not much else. However, our local garage is one of the few businesses still operating, run my Nick - sole proprietor/mechanic and altogether lovely man.
He has just returned my car to me (driven it round) after replacing a headlight which had gone last week. Driver's side - resulting in tense drive down M6 and M1 in the rain on Thursday night. Bill? £5 and he only got it an hour ago. Not many main dealers would do that - it would be parts plus labour charge plus VAT and I would have had to go 6 miles and back or organise a courtesy car and they woldn't have been able to fit me in for 3 days, blah, blah, blah.
Our garage, well Nick actually, is one of my local heroes.
Do you have anysimilar instances of a local hero?
