Cocktails. Advice please!

I enjoy a drink and I particularly like cocktails, though I've not made them for ages. Certainly not for 30 years!

What should I have in my kitchen cupboard to get me going again? I have nothing so grand as a cocktail cabinet, I'm afraid.

I have already this entirely random mixture of bottles (the spirits are all very ordinary, so very suitable for mixing into cocktails):

Whisky
Brandy
Gin
Bacardi
Grappa
Campari
Noilly Prat
Cinzano Extra Dry
Marsala wine
Fino sherry
Peroni beer
French cider
Ginger wine
Blue curaçao
Galliano
Cassis
Grenadine syrup
Tabasco
Celery salt
Also a bottle of Champagne (a present for my 65th birthday but not special)

And Jingjiu, a totally and I mean totally undrinkable spirit which I bought in China when I was working there!

I also have an electric juicer, which I hardly ever use but which works well, and an excellent open air market nearby where oranges, pineapples, red grapes, green grapes, mangoes, papaya, lemons, kiwi fruit, apples, grapefruit, pears etc etc are all very cheap and available.

And I have a cocktail shaker, a Christmas present from way back.

I particularly fancy fruit juice based cocktails, I love coconut, they'll be healthier, won't they (ha ha!) I love whisky sours. I can't stand even the smell of vodka, so please don't suggest Bloody Marys etc. despite me having celery salt in my cupboard.

The price of Angostura Bitters I noticed in my local large supermarket this evening is currently £6.49 a bottle! So I need to prioritise, so most important purchase first please!

The only cocktails I can spot lurking in the list of ingredients above are Whisky Mac (am drinking one now!), a classic Martini (which never really excites me) and/or Kir Royale (hmm, I prefer plain Champagne, who wouldn't!)

Over to you
i) what do I buy next to start me off
ii) which cocktails will I end up making (and loving!)

I know there are lots of websites out there dully listing cocktails, but its your personal knowledge and experience (that's what grans and gramps are good at isn't it?) that I'm after grin

Try and get a bottle of Aperol a lovely ltalian drink mixes well with lemonade.
Avoid the dry ice though - can't believe cocktail bars have been putting this in peoples drinks!

isthisallthereis Wed 17-Oct-12 23:00:53

Wow tattynan never heard of Aperol, but see this - a page of Aperol cocktails!

www.aperol.com/?page_id=12

Yum!

Made by the people who make Campari and it originates in Parma (gorgeous place) so can't be bad. And it contains cinchona en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinchona

Fascinating stuff! "Every day's a schoolday"

Advice please: some of these recipes contain Ginger Beer (ie NOT Dry Ginger or Ginger Ale).

So which Ginger Beer does anyone favour??

I know there are Fiery Jamaican ones in a cheap can (good?) and I have NEVER been impressed with any Fentiman product, they seem way overpriced. Cheap supermarket stuff in a giant 2 litre plastic bottle can't be any good, can it?

And are we talking alcoholic (in a cocktail, phew!) or non-alcoholic ie making a "long" drink?

Favourites for either please.

tattynan Wed 17-Oct-12 23:18:57

Thanks Isthisallthereis for the Aperol website info. Got 2 bottles of Aperol last time I was in duty free in Greece. Will be trying out new cocktail recipes now.smile

Nelliemoser Wed 17-Oct-12 23:24:13

My advice is steer clear and think of your livers! grin wink

isthisallthereis Thu 18-Oct-12 00:29:04

Naaah, nelliemoser why?

Drinking in moderation.

You're only old/young once.

isthisallthereis Wed 24-Oct-12 18:58:03

Any advice on the best ginger beer(s) for cocktail mixing, pls??

annodomini Wed 24-Oct-12 19:02:36

Crabbie's alcoholic ginger beer, good enough on its own.

isthisallthereis Thu 25-Oct-12 22:49:13

Excellent. This is about to get serious!

First. Aperol, much recommended in this thread, has £2 off at Sainsbury's online. I was buying lots of other things so I got free delivery (midweek). Not sure if the offer is in-store as well.

http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/groceries/index.jsp?bmUID=1351200785743

Looks like I'll need soda or lemonade to add to it.

I've also bought three different Ginger Ales / Ginger Beers! Sorry annodomini yr post came too late otherwise I'd have just bought the Crabbies.

Luckily I did choose that and also have bought Belvoir and Sainsbury's.

Early start tomorrow, so it looks like serious "cocktail research" may have to wait until the weekend!

Any more recipes please.....

isthisallthereis Sat 27-Oct-12 18:39:10

Have sampled the first one jeni:

"My champagne cocktail
1/2measure brandy
1/2measure Cointreau
Top up with champagne
Serve poured over a sugar lump garnish with orange and lemon"

Awesome! Wonderful. Not quite sweet, which is just how I like things (Freud, pls analyse).

Pleasantly "cocktailed" by 6.30pm. Hmm, time to watch another DVD episode of "Six Feet Under", very favourite TV series. smile

More cocktail recipes/favourites please.

absentgrana Sat 27-Oct-12 18:47:23

isthis You could rub the sugar lump over the outside of an orange to collect some of the volatile oil before you put it into the glass.

Btw It's always a good idea to chill cocktail glasses before using them. Diluting cocktails with ice is not the plan.

BERMUDA HIGHBALL

Measure gin
Measure brandy
Measure dry vermouth

Top up with very cold ginger beer

Garnish with twist of lemon peel

Pretty amazing! As you might imagine.

annodomini Fri 02-Nov-12 20:01:52

Would I even remember it? hmm

isthisallthereis Fri 02-Nov-12 21:52:05

Probably not! [devilish emoticon]smile

Anyone noticed Prosecco on sale in Tesco for an amazing £6.81 a bottle? That's even cheaper than Aldi!

With the Aperol that Sainsbury were selling recently at £2 off, plus soda-water, ice and a slice of orange as garnish, we could all be drinking delicious bargain Spritz for Christmas!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spritz_(alcoholic_beverage)

The taste of Venice for me (I've never been there at the right time of year for Bellini cocktails).

I prefer the Aperol version of Spritz to the Campari one. But that could require some serious testing smile I know that one of the two versions is dismissed as a corrupt Padua nonsense in Venice. I think I'd had too many glasses of Spritz to remember! Does anyone know which is which?

isthisallthereis Mon 12-Nov-12 22:51:34

Goodness, here's more info about Spritz than I was expecting! Scroll down for recipes:

theartichokeblog.com/spritz/

I stand corrected. Apparently never Soda-water, only ever sparkling mineral water.

Now where can I find Cynar at a good price.....

My sons introduced me to Mahitos when they took me to a rock concert.Wow they're nice - think they're made with white rum - does anyone have the receipt? Ok I'll google it.

Nonu Tue 13-Nov-12 16:32:05
