Cocktails. Advice please!

I enjoy a drink and I particularly like cocktails, though I've not made them for ages. Certainly not for 30 years!

What should I have in my kitchen cupboard to get me going again? I have nothing so grand as a cocktail cabinet, I'm afraid.

I have already this entirely random mixture of bottles (the spirits are all very ordinary, so very suitable for mixing into cocktails):

Whisky
Brandy
Gin
Bacardi
Grappa
Campari
Noilly Prat
Cinzano Extra Dry
Marsala wine
Fino sherry
Peroni beer
French cider
Ginger wine
Blue curaçao
Galliano
Cassis
Grenadine syrup
Tabasco
Celery salt
Also a bottle of Champagne (a present for my 65th birthday but not special)

And Jingjiu, a totally and I mean totally undrinkable spirit which I bought in China when I was working there!

I also have an electric juicer, which I hardly ever use but which works well, and an excellent open air market nearby where oranges, pineapples, red grapes, green grapes, mangoes, papaya, lemons, kiwi fruit, apples, grapefruit, pears etc etc are all very cheap and available.

And I have a cocktail shaker, a Christmas present from way back.

I particularly fancy fruit juice based cocktails, I love coconut, they'll be healthier, won't they (ha ha!) I love whisky sours. I can't stand even the smell of vodka, so please don't suggest Bloody Marys etc. despite me having celery salt in my cupboard.

The price of Angostura Bitters I noticed in my local large supermarket this evening is currently £6.49 a bottle! So I need to prioritise, so most important purchase first please!

The only cocktails I can spot lurking in the list of ingredients above are Whisky Mac (am drinking one now!), a classic Martini (which never really excites me) and/or Kir Royale (hmm, I prefer plain Champagne, who wouldn't!)

Over to you
i) what do I buy next to start me off
ii) which cocktails will I end up making (and loving!)

I know there are lots of websites out there dully listing cocktails, but its your personal knowledge and experience (that's what grans and gramps are good at isn't it?) that I'm after grin

PS I should have added, I have no intention of pouring all the contents of this cupboard into one big glass and drinking a Gransnet Punch.

I'm waaaay to sophisticated for that!

grin You may not have a cocktail cabinet, isthisallthereis, but you must have a much larger drinks cupboard than I have!
I'll leave your query to other gransnetters more knowledgeable on this subject to answer, but I have to say you're certainly putting some interesting threads up. smile

A nice starting point for you could be the Savoy Cocktail Book.

I like the idea of a Gransnet Punch for our virtual parties!

isthis, the contents of your drinks cupboard has given me a headache. Must go to bed and close my eyes! grin

1shot Luxardo limoncello liqueur
1shot Freshly squeezed lemon juice
½fresh Egg white

Wow grannyactivist, that's exactly the sort of thing I'm after. It sounds lethal.

And I noticed my supermarket sells bottles of limoncello. Not sure if it's Luxardo brand, but needs must.....

More please, gransnetters. Plus advice on what else to buy!

I need yr help. If expensive mistakes are to be avoided.

I love a Clover Club, isthis.

1½ Oz. Gin
3/4 Oz. Lemon Juice
1/4 Oz. Raspberry Syrup (or Grenadine)
1 Egg White

Dry shake ingredients to emulsify, add ice, shake and served straight up.

So it looks like you might need some egg whites, to make mine and grannya's - and then just some lemon juice and you're good to go. I can confirm this is utterly delicious (had one last night!) and very pink!

I suggest yo buy a bar measure.

Sidecar:Put cracked ice, 2 measures brandy, 1 measure Curaçao or other triple sec and 1 measure lemon juice into a cocktail shaker. Shake well, strain into a glass and decorate with an orange peel twist.

Suffering Bastard: Pour 1 tablespoon Angostura bitters into a tumbler, swirl it around to coat and pour away the excess. Half fill the glass with cracked ice, add 2 measures gin, 11/2 measures brandy, 1/2 measure lime juice and 1 teaspoon sugar syrup* (or caster sugar if you don't have sugar syrup) and stir well to mix. Top up with ginger beer, decorate with a sprig of mint and a slice each of lime and cucumber.

French 75: Put cracked ice, 2 measures brandy, 1 measure lemon juice and 1 tablespoon sugar syrup* (or caster sugar if you don't have sugar syrup) into a cocktail shaker and shake well. Strain into a highball glass, top up with Champagne and decorate with a twist of lemon peel.

Daiquiri: Put cracked ice into a cocktail shaker, add 2 measures Bacardi, 3/4 measure lime juice and 1/2 teaspoon sugar syrup* (or caster sugar if you don't have sugar syrup) and shake well, then pour into a chilled cocktail glass.

*To make sugar syrup, pour 4 tablespoons water into a saucepan, add 4 tablespoons caster sugar and stir over a low heat until the sugar has completely dissolved. Bring to the boil and continue to boil, without stirring, for 1–2 minutes. Remove from the heat and leave to cool, then pour into a covered container and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Chin chin.

Many thanks. These are great and mostly I have the ingredients. The bar measure I use is the cap of the cocktail shaker. I can even make fresh lime juice. Gin and brandy in the same cocktail, no wonder it's called a Suffering Bastard! I'll need to lash out and buy some Angostura Bitters.

For the Sidecar, is Cointreau good, is that an orange-flavour triple sec? I've always rather liked Cointreau. Note to self, need to buy some.

effblinder. I have eggs in the fridge. A Clover Club soon; though sadly not tonight!

The French 75 seems very close to what we used to call a Champagne Cocktail.

Any longer fruity ones please?? Memories of holidays in the Caribbean?

jeni Wed 17-Oct-12 13:12:33

Brandy Alexander, my favourite.
Brandy
Creme de cocoa
Cream
A little nutmeg
Shaken over ice!

My champagne cocktail
1/2measure brandy
1/2measure Cointreau
Top up with champagne
Serve poured over a sugar lump garnish with orange and lemon

absentgrana Wed 17-Oct-12 13:48:56

isthisallthereis I'm not sure whether it's called a suffering bastard because it makes you feel that way if you drink too many or if it acts a hair of the dog when you've had too many the previous evening.

This is fruity, easy and refreshing.
Bellini: Stir together 2 measures chilled peach juice, 4 measures chilled Champagne or sparkling white wine and a dash of grenadine in a large wine glass. Thread a slice of peach and 2 raspberries on to a cocktail stick and use to decorate the glass.

Now this is what I was hoping to see on Gransnet - I only joined yesterday and my horizons are widening no end!

Personal favourite is a Vodka Martini, very boring but I figure it can't be as calorific as some of these PUDDINGS!

Isthisallthereis - I'm abreviating your name, henceforth I TAT I - easier to remember when you've worked your way through the suggestions!!

jeni Wed 17-Oct-12 14:12:16

absentisnt this a version of a Bellini?

absentgrana Wed 17-Oct-12 14:19:46

jeni Isn't what a version of a Bellini?

gillybob Wed 17-Oct-12 14:26:13

My favourite at the minute isthisallthereis is :

Vodka
Fresh Lime juice
Ginger Beer

Not sure if I can remember it's name but it is a lovely drink. smile

jeni Wed 17-Oct-12 14:26:30

Your suffering bastard

isthisallthereis Wed 17-Oct-12 14:34:42

aaaagh, not vodka please gillybob (see above)

gillybob Wed 17-Oct-12 14:36:42

Ooops sorry isthisallthereis perhaps said while looking in the drinks cupboard and finding that there was no Vodka !! grin

absentgrana Wed 17-Oct-12 14:55:49

gillybob That's a Moscow Mule. isthisallthereis It is still good if gin is substituted for the vodka when it's called a Delft Donkey. jeni The Suffering Bastard was a different post from the Bellini and isn't at all like a Bellini, not least because it contains no peach juice, wine or grenadine but does contain gin, brandy, lime juice and ginger beer. confused

gillybob Wed 17-Oct-12 15:13:34

Moscow Mule Yes that's the one thanks absent . Its such a lovely drink. My daughter says its also nice with a decent Whisky.

POGS Wed 17-Oct-12 17:19:50
