- for a trip, and I don't know where she is!
She let me know they were away, but not where.
I sent her an email asking, and saying I hope they are not near the east coast, and I just got an out-of-office acknowledgement! Now I will have to wait until she accesses her email there, I suppose. Meanwhile all the US weather forecasts are worrying..........

alie , that is good news indeed smile

AlieOxon Mon 05-Nov-12 16:09:26

All ok with my sister and Rob. Hope all get back safe and sound.

I know3 that is your dearest dream , smile

It'll probably be on one of the racing channels, but I don't subscribe to them. It seems strange these days in that they have all the fillies and mares racing on Friday night and the colts on Saturday. I may find a link to a racing radio of some kind; I do get a live tv link sometimes [calracing] but it's a bit hit and miss. Andrew Lloyd Webbers fillie, The Fugue is running tomorrow night, so fingers crossed for her. I did hear that the weather had caused problems with some of the East Coast horses, as they have to arrive 3 days prior to the racing. Oh to so rich that I could go to Santa Anita this weekend and then on to Melbourne on Monday!

Hi Crimson , not overly familiar with N.Y, only been there once . Hoever I do believe it can get pretty cold , snow etc.

Thanks for bringing my attention to Breeders cup at santa Anita , depends whether we get it on T.V.. Will you ?

Nonu; my son is talking about going to New York in February with his girlfriend [it's her birthday]. Is February a bad time to go there and, if so what time of year do you think is the best? Will you be watching/listening to The Breeders Cup from Santa Anita this weekend?

As posted on 29th my thoughts and prayers are still with the U.S.A , particulary the East coast . Also any of you with relatives or friends over there . They are a tough old Nation though , and can somehow seem to shrug things off

Relieved to hear everybody is safe. How disappointing to lose a holiday but their well-being is what really matters.

It' awful, isn't it? My sister, her husband and five daughters are in New York for a one week, long anticipated family trip. They've been stuck in their hotel for a fair bit of the time, although they have been able to get out a bit. I was really scared for them, but I've heard that they're all ok, and hope to be able to fly home on Friday as planned. It's such a shame, I feel really bad for them!

My sister now says they hope to get a flight tomorrow......I will keep my fingers crossed, it sounds unlikely from what I have seen today on the news.

Just heard from my friend, who has been over there for 3/4 weeks. She is coming back on the Queen Mary, due on the 4th.
She says they had a rather uncomfortable night and at the moment her insides are a bit wobbly!

Alie try not to worry, the US is very well organised on these things and if she'd been at risk in an area she would have been part of the mandatory evacuation. Certainly there will be disruption to Atlantic flights - US flights are typically full so finding seats for all the disrupted passengers will be an issue later this week.

Sounds as if she's a sensible lady with the correct priorities: food, milk, chocolate and wine!

I'm currently waiting to hear from my son who's on a flight from Las Vegas to Toronto as I type..looking at the size of this storm, it is scary.

Oh and thank you for your comment on another posting of mine smile

Nonu Mon 29-Oct-12 14:04:13

Agree, Ali , anyway fingers crossed

AlieOxon Mon 29-Oct-12 14:02:22

Having looked at the map, and the projected path of the storm, I can't see them getting from Boston, Mass. to Lexington, Kentucky in a hurry!

AlieOxon Mon 29-Oct-12 13:27:30

Said she was coming back Wed, but now she says
'due in Lexington later this week but not sure when we'll get there! We've stocked up on food, milk, chocolate and wine and staying in hotel to watch the weather on TV!'

Sounds like changed plans and weather there not too great! Sounds sensible though...

JessM Mon 29-Oct-12 13:19:30

Glad that you heard from her Allie. Listening to the news, it sounds as though the storm will not be finished by Wednesday though, as it is very slow moving. And as all flights to E coast cancelled, there will be disruption for days. The important thing is you know she is safe and that good preparations are being made to deal with the emergency.

Just had a text from my sister - she was just about to board a plane for Australia! She had planned to go in a couple of days time to visit her son over there, but was able to change her ticket and get away before the flights are grounded. Phew!

whenim64 Mon 29-Oct-12 12:57:42

Glad you've heard she is ok Alie

annodomini Mon 29-Oct-12 12:25:26

Good news, then. Alie, but most of the transatlantic carriers have cancelled flights today - maybe by Wednesday things will be looking up.

AlieOxon Mon 29-Oct-12 12:18:34

Got back from Oxford to find a message from my sister that she and the b/f are in Boston, so ok - lots of rain and some strong winds forecast though.
Now wondering what disruption there will be when they return on Wednesday!

Nonu Mon 29-Oct-12 11:40:45

Thoughts and prayers with all people in U.S.A right now . Especially East Coast , with Frankenstorm heading their way

AlieOxon Mon 29-Oct-12 08:15:26

Oh, yes. I think that's quite likely.
Good luck to everyone with people over there.

grannyactivist Mon 29-Oct-12 01:12:58

My sister is in Connecticut - and, very unusually, I've also had no reply to a text message. She lives on the coast and I've seen online that her area has been evacuated, so I'm guessing that the mobile systems may have been overloaded with people texting/calling to inform relatives of their whereabouts.

AlieOxon Sun 28-Oct-12 20:52:02

I hope they flew OVER....they probably did...I just wish she had said where they were going. The only place she has said she went that I remember, is Lexington, but she doesn't tell me things, even about her work. Last time I asked her she said 'much the same as last year'....only she never told me last year!
They may have difficulty getting back, I think.

Nonu Sun 28-Oct-12 19:55:08

Depends what part of the U.S. she is , some are better than others . However , we have found it is better to be back in the U.k. by October
