Jane x to you and the parents of the soldier

whenim64 Wed 07-Nov-12 11:38:11

Ah! Now I see the difference between the two. Smirr sounds a bit like Peter Kay's 'light drizzle that soaks through.'grin

Bags Wed 07-Nov-12 11:49:44

Another way to distinguish between them: smirr – light but 'thick' rain; dreich – heavy, thick, low visibility, rainy weather, and cold with it, even if the thermometer says otherwise!

Grannylin Wed 07-Nov-12 12:07:46

Have you got as many words for sunny bags or not!grin

Bags Wed 07-Nov-12 12:19:51

Sunny? What's that? wink

soop Wed 07-Nov-12 12:28:36

Bags smirr a lovely word. Appropriate for today. smile

Greatnan Wed 07-Nov-12 12:32:01

Respect, Bags, that was quite some walk!
We have had a funny week of weather - snow, then sun, then mist, then rain, then frost......brilliant sunshine today and on my walk I could see that the ski slopes had a good covering of snow, but I expect it will come and go several times before the real season starts.
I walked for an hour up a steep path and then across frosted fields -I like the sound of the grass crunching. Some of my usual walks and lanes are impassable at the moment - they are now little rivers of melting snow.
The air here is like wine - the only 'pollution' is smoke from wood-burning stoves, which I like. It must be the same near you, Bags.

Come to think of it, I can't think of any Scottish term for 'sunny'. Wonder why grin

Ella46 Wed 07-Nov-12 19:13:07

I went to see Skyfall today, and I thought it was absolutely fantastic! Could have done without the half hour of very loud adverts beforehand though!
Shanghai looks wonderful at night with all the lights and dragons, amazing stunts and our favourite Judi Dench smile

JessM Wed 07-Nov-12 20:10:22

The adverts are appalling aren't they ella - i can't remember the products that any of them were selling, except that just perhaps one was a watch. I think they misjudged the target audience for the ads!

Ariadne Wed 07-Nov-12 20:23:52

Belated hello, nanadog x

crimson Wed 07-Nov-12 20:54:26

If one of the adverts was for Priority Sport I actually look forward to the advert coming on; it's one of my favourite bits of music at the mo.

Today I started the Toby the train cake I am taking to DGS's 1st birthday tea on Sunday. Baked the cakes, tomorrow I will shape and put on the buttercream and the brown sugarpaste icing. In London all day Friday with DH who has an endoscopy so I will have to finish the roof, windows, doors and fiddly bits on Saturday. Alternatively it's a mercy dash to M&S for a caterpillar cake!

I had an induction session in the gym with a nice young man who gave me a gentle workout to start with. Came home, had a nap and this evening I have been to Northern Opera's Don Giovanni at the Lowry. Fantastic! I had treated myself to a very good seat in the front of the circle and relished every moment.

Message from DS to say he has had photos published in the morning paper. They are hoping to get Kielder recognised as a dark sky reserve and the Royal obsevatory at Greenwich are backing them. This year the campsite was like the great lakes, even had ducks swimming in between the tents smile

Jodi Thu 08-Nov-12 14:45:05

Attended funeral earlier. It was a 'good' one. Heading home on trains tonight as can't bear the crush on Fridays.

whitewave Thu 08-Nov-12 18:57:55

Yesterday I collected DH from hospital after nearly 1 month of a real rollercoaster. The hospital never identified the virus and bacteria that caused him so much hassle, but at long last they have been defeated and the pacemaker fitted.

He is very weak and sleeps a lot but we are optimistic that it is all positive from now on.

The care and support from the NHS and his cardiac team has been superb.

Thanks GN's for your support.

Ella I too saw Skyfall this week - fantastic escapism!
I am now at DD1's on the last lap of my circumnavigation of the SE. Have so far driven nearly 800 miles visiting friends and family and am really looking forward to sleeping in my own bed on saturday night- sharing with 2 and 3 year olds is not conducive to restful sleep grin. We (DD1 and 2 children) leave here on saturday morning, pick up DD3 and her 2 children and then proceed in a northerly direction until we hit Scotland - I am really looking forward to that journey shock

Ella46 Thu 08-Nov-12 19:06:29

Gally I feel exhausted just reading about it! shock

Marelli Thu 08-Nov-12 19:21:15

Gally - just misread that as 'proceed in a motherlydirection until we hit Scotland...' (wasn't far wrong, anyway!) grin

Gally Thu 08-Nov-12 19:42:14

Marelli grin

annodomini Thu 08-Nov-12 19:50:22

Gally, you must be exhausted already, never mind the long drive back to Fife. Do your DDs share the driving? And what are you driving, with all those children! A bus?

annodomini Thu 08-Nov-12 19:55:03

whitewave, I'm so pleased you have your OH back home. He will be better in his own surroundings and you must be relieved not to be commuting to and from the hospital. flowers for you both.

Bags Thu 08-Nov-12 19:57:10

whitewave, it's probably a good thing your DH sleeps a lot; you'll need to take it easy too between bouts of looking after him flowers

Well done, sonofharri. I agree that that area should be protected from light pollution. Good luck with his endeavours.

gally, just reading all that makes me exhausted too! Safe journey!

granjura Thu 08-Nov-12 20:02:02

whitewave, hopes he gets stronger soon - don't hesitate to ask family and friends + professionals for support, you need to keep your strengh.

Had 40 old biddies here for lunch - including the local OAP home. Getting the room ready and laying tables, flower displays - then serving 3 courses, clearing up + washing up, etc. Then help with bingo - followed by tea and cake.

Will do all the cleaning and finishing tomorrow- we are both pooped.

jeni Thu 08-Nov-12 20:18:02

White wave, hop all goes well
