I want to punch myself in the head - hard.

I have been without TV for a week, ever since we had a blizzard and I lost my signal. I tried to reprogramme my Humax Freesat Box myself and could not get past the page which asked for my post code (to find out which region's news I wanted). I put in the UK post code I have always used, but it kept telling me it was invalid. The engineer finally came out today, put in the post code without the space between the two sets of letters and - hey presto, I had all my channels back. It did tell me to use a space, honestly, but if I had tried it without I could have saved myself €60. It took him about ten minutes, but he had an hour's return travelling time.
I suppose I should be relieved because I thought he would need to go on the roof and do something to the satellite dish, but I just want to kick myself. (No volunteers, please!) [anger]

We all get a mental block sometimes. I had a similar thing with my sat nav. Tried to put in the postcode of my destination and it would not accept it. Got very frustrated then noticed my neighbour in his garden and asked him to have a look at it, convinced he would say it was broken, he put in the postcode (without the space) and it was fine blush. He is usually pretty good at helping me out but I think this time he thought I was beginning to lose it!

Thank you, Barrow, you have made me feel better!

Greatnan...you are like the rest of us...human! xxx

I've started doing things just like that.

Nelliemoser Thu 08-Nov-12 17:11:34

Its easily done with a lot of things like that.

I have had no end of trouble with passwords for different savings accounts. Having put things in different places as we are told to do, some of the providers want them to be so complicated that I get it wrong and I have had to change passwords several times.

Also a senior moment when after paying by credit card for my groceries at the supermarket only to go completely blank on the PIN at their petrol pumps 10 minutes later.

I feel like I am losing the plot every time.

Mishap Thu 08-Nov-12 17:15:17

Oh - I once had to get a new card with a new pin, because the original had departed my brain completely!

And, as for the passwords that you have to conjure up every time you biy anything online - not a hope of remembering those!

Sorry about the 50 euros - that would stick in my throat!

petallus Thu 08-Nov-12 17:17:53

I've been getting quite worried about going blank. I was trying to think of Denis Waterman's name for ages and could only come up with Robson Green. I knew it wasn't him but the name sort of wouldn't get out of my head and hence blocked other alternatives.

I use google all the time, for lyrics of songs, names of actors or films, and to watch TV/radio programmes I have missed. Sometimes I find that if I just put something out of my head, the correct name pops back unexpectedly.

Don't forget (sorry) that we've got 60/70/80 years of information stored away in our brains, so of course it takes much longer to process!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

gramps Thu 08-Nov-12 17:54:22

Friends I've known for years,I have to try to describe to my wife 'cos their names have gone. I emptied the teapot earlier and then tried to put it in the fridge!

annodomini Thu 08-Nov-12 18:45:47

Mishap, I keep a list of usernames and passwords in a personal file on my laptop. I suppose I should find a way to put a password on this file but I'd be sure to forget it. Today I went to the CAB which had a new number put on the lock pad last week. I had put this number on my phone - but today the phone was at home on its charger. blush

Wouldn't punching yourself in the head greatnan merely exacerbate the problem? hmm

annodomini This is what I have done - I have managed to password protect the document so I only have one password to remember! I have to admit that I do have the pin numbers for my debit and credit cards written down though. I once tried to use my debit card and entered a pin that I used to have around 6 years ago - why could I remember that one but not the current one?

Mishap Fri 09-Nov-12 12:18:54

Yes - annodomini - I did that when entering my car number in a parking machine - I just put it in without thinking - then when I looked I realised I had entered one from a car from several years' ago.

I may have told this story before; so forgive me if I have (I can't remember!).....when I worked on a dementia unit, one elderly lady still had insight into her loss of memory and was very upset about it. I told her that her brain was like a box of treasures and it was getting very full now, so some of the new treasures hadn't room and they fell out of the top. She was delighted with this idea and beamed all over her face. Fiive minutes later she said: "What was that you said?" Oh dear - a good try.

All the passwords and user names that I have written in my book look like something off Countdown before they have completed the answer, goodness knows how DD would disypher them if I popped my clogs confused

I have never gone out without my pants but did, once, manage to get half way to work without me teeth!shock Only realised because I was singing along to the radio and realised I shounded shtrange. Drove back home for teeth very carefully in case of accident while gumsey, how would I have explained that to Poleesh? grin

Nanadog Sat 10-Nov-12 12:15:48

Oh heck...it's happening to me too. Went out to collect the eggs, on way back to house decided to collect ripe chilli pepper. Took eggs and chillies inside and put the latter on the radiators to dry. Couldn't find eggs anywhere. Searched for 10 minutes then noticed the colander I use to fetch eggs was hanging in usual place, washed and dried. Eggs to in rack, washed, dried and dated.
I've NO recollection of doing this at all. Time for a strong coffee????

I met my neighbour's new dog today - he's a 'Battersea Boy', a rescue dog. I asked what his name was... she couldn't remember...

Whatever is wrong with not wearing knickers? True, the weather hasn't been right this year but on a hot summer's day?
