I fully appreciate the person suffering from any illness choosing to joke about it - and also their nearest and dearest. What I don't like is somebody who is not a sufferer using it as a vehicle for 'humour'.
I could post dozens of jokes about disabiliy and illness - the sites I use are full of them. I choose not do so .

And all of you now putting the boot in are being ridiculous. And you must know it.

jO5 Fri 16-Nov-12 19:37:44

I may have had some very bad experiences in life relating to mental illness, both for myself and for someone very dear to me.

But I would never spout about it on a forum thread.

I totally agree with vamp that there is a huge difference between laughing with someone and laughing at them. I think that is the point of the design jings highlighted. As butty says, it certainly gets the point across. Nobody suffering from bipolar disorder would wear it when they were in a down phase, but they might well want to take the disease's piss with such a T-shirt during an up phase. I think I would.

In a similar way, it would be very easy to slip into depression with ME, but if one can joke about its annoyances and trials, somehow it's much easier to cope.

It's probably the same for any illness.

Okay I'm going to have to ask, can someone explain to me why the design is clever please? I haven't managed to get it.

I think many people don't realise just how agonising it is to suffer from bipolar disorder (formerly known as manic depression of course).

vampire (((( hugs ))))

Butty Fri 16-Nov-12 19:05:09

I happen to think it's an extremely good design. I don't particularly like it - but it certainly gets the message across.

vampirequeen Fri 16-Nov-12 18:58:08

I don't think wanting to kill myself on a regular basis is particularly funny but hey if you do then laugh away. You talk about gallows humour. There is a great difference between laughing with someone and laughing at someone.

whenim64 Fri 16-Nov-12 18:29:09

My sister and her husband had a few in-jokes about her cancer. Gallows humour helped them to cope. We had a few moments when anyone looking in on us would have thought we'd lost the plot, but it helped. Her mental health suffered but we all found a way to keep cheerful. Everyone is different, aren't they?

Please, everyone, feel free to take the piss about ME. The merrier and more insulting towards the disease the better as far as I'm concerned. jings, if you find a good "mock ME" T-shirt, let me know, would you?

Ella46 Fri 16-Nov-12 18:21:17

Bags sounds like my dad too! smile

Bags Fri 16-Nov-12 18:18:36

My dad joked about his illness when he was dying of lung cancer. It helped him to cope. He appreciated other people taking its piss as well. Mocking a disease is not mocking a person. He was still quipping right up to the day before he died. Good on him.

He had also joked, for fifteen years, about the effects of the brain operation he'd had which, he said, required that his short term memory be removed.

Brave man, and fun to be with.

vampirequeen Fri 16-Nov-12 14:50:38

I'm not saying you do or don't suffer from anything...simply that I wouldn't wish mental health issues on my worst enemy and that I don't find my own or anyone else's illnesses amusing.

jO5 Fri 16-Nov-12 14:21:43

But you don't know me! How do you know what I might suffer from? shock

Weird.

vampirequeen Fri 16-Nov-12 14:10:32

JO5..."I just hope that whatever I have had to go through in my life, and whatever lies in front, I don't lose my sense of humour.

And the ability to laugh at myself."

I hope you never suffer from any form of mental illness. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I don't find my illness remotely amusing. Neither do I find the illnesses of others amusing.

Greatnan Fri 16-Nov-12 10:51:29

Jingle, if you cannot engage in rational and courteous argument, perhaps you should avoid posting things which you know will be controversial.

jO5 Fri 16-Nov-12 10:48:10

and stay away from that report button! wink grin

jO5 Fri 16-Nov-12 10:47:36

That was to anno!

jO5 Fri 16-Nov-12 10:47:11

piss off

grin

annodomini Fri 16-Nov-12 10:44:22

Thank goodness for small mercies. wink

Greatnan Fri 16-Nov-12 10:44:15

But you weren't laughing at yourself, were you, jingle?

jO5 Fri 16-Nov-12 10:39:38

I just hope that whatever I have had to go through in my life, and whatever lies in front, I don't lose my sense of humour.

And the ability to laugh at myself.

That is my last word on this subject.

annodomini Fri 16-Nov-12 10:38:06

It's an ugly t-shirt which might be excusable if it was associated with some campaign or other. Who on earth would want to wear it? Well, I see it's an American web site. Let's hope it doesn't cross the Atlantic.
