Alastair Campbell says he was at a, presumably working, breakfast with the manager of a "major employer" today. This manager wants to educate his/her line managers about the mental health of employees. It's a start. As the saying goes: all publicity is good publicity.

I've just read the article Jane and I understand what he's saying about celebrities not really representing ordinary folk. However, I think the awareness-raising has only just begun. In time, just provoking more talking and thinking about bipolar disorder and other health problems should, I think, make a positive difference to attitudes. After all, it has worked with gays 'outing' themselves. It's working with atheism. It has worked to some extent with various physical disabilities. I remain hopeful that raising awareness does, in the long term, do good.

here is Max Pemberton on the subject of celebrity Bipolar, in today's Telegraph.
He thinks celebrities speaking out does nothing to help ordinary sufferers.

If the T-shirts were designed to provoke humour then that is not how I reacted to them. I found them thought provoking, showing both sides of bipolar. I have experience of the condition, a close friends, sadly deceased, suffered from it and am fully aware it's not just being happy.

NO prob. honey x

vampirequeen Sun 18-Nov-12 21:26:53

My apologies Nonu...I misunderstood your post.

Nonu Sun 18-Nov-12 21:25:42

DON"T think biopolar humerous at all , in fact it must be wretched for suffers .

I mean"t the other Tees , were humerous

vampirequeen Sun 18-Nov-12 20:59:34

It's not just humour though. Some people may find it funny but others find it offensive.

If it was racist would anyone be arguing that it was just humour or saying it was funny. Even though there are some people in society who would see it as such we acknowledge that the offence and upset caused is greater than the potential humour.

petallus Sun 18-Nov-12 20:36:34

I agree with that crimson especially when it comes to the manic state; people think it is like being very happy when in fact it is just as painful and dangerous as the depressed end of the cycle.

Nonu Sun 18-Nov-12 20:33:14

"Bad Idea Tees , think they are great !

Not so keen on Biopolar , but that is me .

I would not wear a printed Tee, but that is me .

It , at the end of the day is just humour .

We need that , big time x

crimson Sun 18-Nov-12 20:27:45

They thought it would be funny because they have no experience of the condition.People can [and do] commit suicide when they are bipolar. If they see people wearing t shirts will it help them? Or might it just tip them over the edge? And would that be amusing?

vampirequeen Sun 18-Nov-12 20:26:01

It's designed to provoke laughter not to provoke a reasoned debate about the nature and consequences of bipolar.

Ana Sun 18-Nov-12 20:23:45

Posts cross, jingl.

vampirequeen, we don't know why it was desgined. Some of the other tee shirts on the site are clever and funny - some are not. They're probably not all by the same designer - the site only sells them.

jO5 Sun 18-Nov-12 20:22:48

I doubt very much it was designed to be mocking.

Someone thought of something they believed would be found amusing by someone out there. So they put it on a t shirt. For profit. No other motives.

jO5 Sun 18-Nov-12 20:20:09

Are the days going a bit fast for you absent?

vampirequeen Sun 18-Nov-12 20:13:50

It wasn't meant to be educational. It was designed to be mocking.....look at the other tee shirts on the site.

It's not the logo so much as the intent.

Wheniwasyourage Sun 18-Nov-12 19:10:48

Just noticed this thread. I thought the logo was a clever (and amusing) way of explaining quickly what bipolar disorder is and so could even count as educational. I can't see that it mocks anyone. [covers head emoticon]
