Honey trap - just what was he thinking?

A 68-year old British academic has been given five years in jail in Argentina for smuggling 2kg of cocaine - he claims he thought he was about to start a new life with a beauty queen, whom he'd met online but never seen in real life.

She never turned up but a guy did and gave him a suitcase to take to Brussels!

Can a grown man be so naive? confused

tanith Thu 22-Nov-12 08:46:59

He wasn't thinking with his head that's for sure...

Greatnan Thu 22-Nov-12 09:08:46

Conceited, self-deluded....like so many ugly old men who think that a lovely young woman is going to love them for themselves alone! (Not forgetting the silly women who think fit young foreign men really want to marry them for love, rather than a British passport.)
No fool like an old fool!

And I thought the nutty professor was a myth.

Nelliemoser Thu 22-Nov-12 09:22:42

Riverwalk The word "man" might be part of it.

Greatnan Thu 22-Nov-12 09:25:47

Don't forget all the silly women who 'love' men so much that they smuggle drugs for them. As if anybody who really loved you would let you risk imprisonment or even death to make money for them. I am afraid that when I watch programmes like 'Banged up abroad' I have little sympathy for most of the subjects - about as much as they had for the people whose lives would be ruined by the drugs.

Riverwalk Thu 22-Nov-12 09:36:49

The silly women I can understand Greatnan - at least they smuggled for a real life boyfriend who 'loves' them - but the professor was gallivanting after 'Miss Bikini World' apparently one of the most gorgeous girls around!

gracesmum Thu 22-Nov-12 11:26:27

He'll have plenty of opportunity to reflect on his folly then. "Dick"- "brain" - good idea to know which is which.

JessM Thu 22-Nov-12 11:29:33

Not just grown but a clever Oxford educated physicist.
But older women do silly things too. Run off with young african men who swear undying love, that kind of thing.

absentgrana Thu 22-Nov-12 11:36:25

What exactly is silly about running off with an African man?

Nanadog Thu 22-Nov-12 11:56:09

There's no fool like an old fool, truly. Poor, sad, deluded man. sad

gracesmum Thu 22-Nov-12 11:57:16

Maybe age difference? Maybe motivation of younger man? I think I know what JessM is talking about as a type of situation, and am sure nothing further from her mind than disrespect to African men !!

Mishap Thu 22-Nov-12 13:02:36

Just following where his d**k is pointing - poor gullible chap.

janthea Thu 22-Nov-12 13:04:23

Moron!

soop Thu 22-Nov-12 13:10:47

Twerp!

Ana Thu 22-Nov-12 13:13:13

I suppose at 68 he's lucky to have one that still points...hmm

soop Thu 22-Nov-12 13:15:12

Ana grin grin grin

jO5 Thu 22-Nov-12 13:54:59

I feel sorry for the daft old bugger. sad

Riverwalk Thu 22-Nov-12 14:09:49

I originally felt a bit sorry for him for being so pathetic but on further reading it seems his emails/texts confirm that he knew what was in the suitcase.

He must have been blinded by love and the thought of all that money to start his new life, with a woman he'd never met.

Greatnan Thu 22-Nov-12 14:16:09

Jingle, do you know anything about the effects of cocaine?

JessM Thu 22-Nov-12 14:51:05

Greatnan was obviously not meant to be a racist comment. Middle aged unattached women with a bit of money go on holidays to various very poor countries - Gambia, West Indies, Far East and some young man, 30-40 years younger, hits on them. Woman convinces herself that this is "love" and burns boats. Chances of happy ending not high. This does happen and I think the women are being as self-deluding as chaps that think pretty young girls, young enough to be their grandchildren are madly in love with them.

jO5 Thu 22-Nov-12 14:54:55

No, I'm far too stupid Greatnan.

I don't know if he knew what was in the suitcase or not. Been looking for the article. Haven't managed to find it yet.

jO5 Thu 22-Nov-12 14:55:33

Is there a link that I can't see?

Riverwalk Thu 22-Nov-12 15:02:17

JO5 here is a link www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/the-denise-milani-conspiracy-honey-trap-professor-gets-five-years-in-argentina-jail-8340525.html

Jessm your first post quite clearly said 'older women and young African men'. I for one never thought that was racist.

jO5 Thu 22-Nov-12 15:09:50

Thank you Riverwalk.

Who knows the truth of it.
