who might be thinking of joining.

You will only be allowed to stay if: you can spell, can type, have a good grasp of English grammar, and preferably have a degree (OU is allowed).

And whatever you do don't show any sign of a slightly smutty sense of humour. That will make the poor gentle-women on here tear their hair, and Gransnet will delete you in case you scare off any potential advertisers. (not there seems to be many at the moment)

Just hand me the gun, JO5.

jO5 Wed 28-Nov-12 15:18:15

Shoot me if I'm back on here for the rest of the afternoon.

The post I started last night said something like:

"What is the point, when someone who you think is not genuine, posts. And then someone answers said poster (giving them the benfit of the doubt, just in case), in putting comments like, 'trip-trap' and other troll indicating comments? (can't remember exact wording) But that's the gist of it.

And I would like to know what these super powers are that Gransnet possesses, that the rest of us certainly couldn't get our poor little heads round. hmm

Maybe a poster resorts to using two names in desperation. If you get put down quite nastily, and then banned, under one name, it might be tempting to use another name just to try again to get a bit of sympathy and understanding.

(No! I haven't done it myself! hmm)

jO5 Don't forget that GNHQ has access to more information about apparent new posters than any of us have. It has been mentioned before that they have ways (unknown to us) of finding out if someone is attempting to use two screen names and it seems likely that they have ways of knowing if a new poster is, in fact, someone who has posted before under a different name and been banned from the site.

I know it's nice to believe the best of everybody, but sometimes it is completely unrealistic.

Yay! A first class example of bad grammar - mine. Though on reflection, it made me chuckle. wink

jO5 Wed 28-Nov-12 14:59:54

I am not going to be kind to people who upset, possibly authentic, new posters.

Gransnet is getting ridiculous with the delete button. hmm

jO5 Wed 28-Nov-12 14:57:21

Would have worn my ear muffs absent. Didn't relise how cold it is out there!

Anne58 Wed 28-Nov-12 14:52:54

Well, I too have just come back from shopping, and I must say some of the posts here have left me shock

Her comment :
"Don't like other people being jibed at for no reason" really takes the biscuit, let alone the cake that someone suggested she needs!

She started a thread late last night, (that many of you will have missed, as it appears to have been deleted ) that was very far from being "funny" and especially removed from any definition I have known as being "kind at heart" .

Are your ears okay jO5? I hate that feeling of overheating and throbbing as the blood unfreezes. Maybe a woolly hat next time?

absentgrana Wed 28-Nov-12 14:44:39

Ah, that's two instances of someone commenting on grammar merlot as the one I was referring to involved another poster.

jO5 Wed 28-Nov-12 14:44:00

Thanks for the cake Faye! smile

glassortwo Wed 28-Nov-12 14:42:57

I thought it was mr S drainage too grin

jO5 Wed 28-Nov-12 14:42:36

Blimey! All this while I was out Xmas shopping.

Went on my bike. Hands freezing as did not take gloves. hmm Ears glowing now th0ugh. smile

River's high!

merlotgran Wed 28-Nov-12 14:42:10

When someone very rudely commented on something I'd written as not being gramatically correct, it was jingle who pointed out that it was GNet etiquette not to criticise another poster's grammar. Personally, I couldn't give a shit damn but it was nice of her to do so. smile

kittylester Wed 28-Nov-12 14:40:44

soop hope they sort out Mr soop's pipes - all of them!!!

Isn't it wonderful how so many different characters appear on here during the average day and, despite everyone's different foibles, we all look forward to seeing what each one has posted and to see where things lead sunshine

And, my mother would never have thought any thing good about me let alone written it, so I really envy those of you who had such mothers.

absentgrana Wed 28-Nov-12 14:30:34

I think I have seen only one instance of a poster commenting on the grammar of another since I joined Gransnet and it was quietly pointed out to her that this is in breach of forum etiquette. My tendency to type in chords has provoked more than one poster to mock me for some very strange spellings – but I think we all know how easy it is to miss a typo until after the damn thing has been posted. Besides, I see it it is quite acceptable to joke about spelling mistakes made by someone who regularly – even frequently – posts in Pedants' Corner. It would be quite a different matter in the case of a poster who was a little unfamiliar with typing and/or expressing their thoughts.

I thought you meany mr soop's drainage confused. london; no one is going to judge you flowers.

london Wed 28-Nov-12 14:24:30

soop Wed 28-Nov-12 14:24:27

Nowt to do with this post, but what the heck...mr soop has appointment for surgery to fix his hernia. The drainage needs attention. Mentioned in passing to our friend, without further ado, three strapping chaps have turned up and are dealing with the problem for the price of a wee dram. That's kindness for you. It's heartwarming stuff...grin

Nonu Wed 28-Nov-12 14:20:24

SEL like it . smile

crimson Wed 28-Nov-12 14:17:57

..some of us are lying in the gutter etc etc....

Bags Wed 28-Nov-12 14:16:43

And if all else fails, one can always lower one's standards wink

Sel Wed 28-Nov-12 14:14:45

crimson my spelling & grammar are good enough for me, standards are another matter though smile

crimson Wed 28-Nov-12 14:06:41

Sel; there aren't standards of spelling and grammar; if there were I wouldn't be here sad.
