who might be thinking of joining.

You will only be allowed to stay if: you can spell, can type, have a good grasp of English grammar, and preferably have a degree (OU is allowed).

And whatever you do don't show any sign of a slightly smutty sense of humour. That will make the poor gentle-women on here tear their hair, and Gransnet will delete you in case you scare off any potential advertisers. (not there seems to be many at the moment)

And jane and petallus

Thanks Pogs and nightowl

We have had quite a few posts where the originator obviously expected to get widespread agreement with their views, and when this did not happen they simply withdrew. I think some people had a view of grandparents that we would all be right-wing, judgemental and critical of the young/disadvantaged/unemployed. How wrong could they be? grin
And, of course, there are the usual idiots who just want to annoy sensible folk, but they are usually fairly obvious to spot. When spelling mistakes are random and inconsistent, most of us have the sense to spot a spoof and don't encourage the poster by replying.

I've not heard of the expression but assumed it was someone who 'jumped' into a thread, made a post likely to cause comment, then 'jumped' out again and didn't return to address any of the responses.

Greatnan Wed 28-Nov-12 07:16:07

I looked up 'jumpers' too and I can't see how it is relevant in this context. Is there some definition that is not given in the list of internet slang?

MiceElf Wed 28-Nov-12 07:02:23

Oh dear. I just googled it under Internet slang jumper, and it's not nice at all.

Ceesnan Wed 28-Nov-12 06:45:42

Forgive my ignorance phoenix, but what is a jumper? It's not a term I've heard before other than referring to the garment.

POGS Wed 28-Nov-12 00:14:30

Nana

Am I out of order saying thank goodness the old saying 'Like father like son' or in your case 'Like mother like daughter' proves to be a load of old crap!!!.

Oh dear does that make sense. confused wine

nightowl Tue 27-Nov-12 23:41:27

So sorry Nanadog flowers

petallus Tue 27-Nov-12 23:34:49

I appreciate the comments on my post so thanks.

Nanadog I think many of us have 'issues' with our mothers. I was no exception but was just lucky that things got sorted out in time for us to be good friends in the ten years or so before she died flowers

Anne58 Tue 27-Nov-12 23:27:26

Sorry to butt in, but didn't really want to put it elsewhere.

The lurkers, I don't mind, indeed there is something to be said for having a good lurk, getting a feel for the site, understanding the wide range of topics and opinions that abound. A bit of time spent having a thorough lurk could be time well spent, so that an informed decision may be made before joining and making a contribution to the many faceted world of Gransnet. In fact, I positively urge you to lurk.

However the jumpers, I am not so keen on, especially when there is a distinct whiff of merde de vache about them, if you will pardon my French. I wonder what they hope to achieve, and having wondered, I am none the wiser, which vexes me somewhat, and I do not like to be vexed. Another point that is causing me a small amount of consternation, is the number of jumpers that we have had recently, again, I wonder why, and again, having wondered, I do not know.

So, in conclusion, I would say to things, namely, lurkers, feel free to lurk and if after a suitable period of time you would like to join us, then do so. Tell us a bit about yourselves, how you came to be here and what you would like to give to, and take from your membership. And to the jumpers, I say *F&#k O$$.

How lovely petallus your mother was obviously very proud of you. I can't remember my mother saying or writing anything about me. When I cleared the family home there were only a few photos and they were mostly of my children, more proud of GD because she could play the piano.

janeainsworth Tue 27-Nov-12 22:27:48

Oh nanadog sad

jO5 Tue 27-Nov-12 22:25:46

I like Grannyeggs best.

Grannyeggs Tue 27-Nov-12 22:24:39

glass I quite likeGoldeneggs

Nanadog Tue 27-Nov-12 22:18:53

My late mother would not have bothered to record anything so trivial in her view. Don't misunderstand me, I think it's lovely what your mum wrote, it just shows how proud she was of you petallus.
If I got a merit, in piano for example, it ought to have been a distinction. If I came 2nd in the year then that was not good enough and all praise was faint. My friends never met with her approval and she tried to push me into befriending the 'rich' girls instead. My father was bad mouthed behind his back and later to his face.
I envy you being tearful for a mum who isn't there any more. It showed you had a loving relationship. When my mother died, by her own hand, my over-riding emotion was relief.

janeainsworth Tue 27-Nov-12 20:52:30

petallus flowers no-one can ever replace your mum, can they?

glassortwo Tue 27-Nov-12 20:51:33

Now I cant find which thread it was hmm

glassortwo Tue 27-Nov-12 20:50:23

Oh hang on I have lost my marbles that last post should be on another thread...thats what I get for DH talking to me for the last 30mins about something really technical he is doing at work (I lost the will to live) and and got confuddled grin

glassortwo Tue 27-Nov-12 20:47:22

jO5 Tue 27-Nov-12 20:15:54

jO5 Tue 27-Nov-12 20:15:23

grin

Grannyeggs Tue 27-Nov-12 20:01:54

I have my first school report framed. It says that April, me, is very good at skipping and jumping.

petallus Tue 27-Nov-12 19:33:58

I was thinking, mum was only in her late twenties when she wrote that.

Suddenly I feel a bit tearful for what I had and haven't got any more.

kittylester Tue 27-Nov-12 17:46:31

Petallus that made me want to cry. sunshine
