Just a thought

We now have three threads about the Duchess of Cambridge's pregnancy – and there are at least 28 weeks to go. I wonder if it might be sensible to have a whole forum entitled Royalty so that all those who wish to speculate about baby names, post pictures of Prince Harry doing something stupid, defend the Prince of Wales's egregious interference in politics, suggest that the Duke of Edinburgh has a single redeeming feature or make sycophantic comments about hard the queen works can do so and access the thoughts of like-minded posters easily and separately.

What - you want more 'royal pregnancy' threads? shock

For the record, I am neither envious of the royal family – indeed, quite the opposite – nor do I feel any spite towards them.

I'm with you there, absent. Not envy, not spite, but I felt the full force of the hype within minutes of the announcement. In fact, I hope that, for William and Kate's sake, the tabloid and broadcast hysteria will abate and let them have a bit of peace.

Ooo lilygran nobody is saying mean things about the royals here that I've noticed. As you rightly say its the media. hmm

absentgrana Tue 04-Dec-12 17:28:42

Ana grin – just an opportunity for threads about royals, but if there are more pregnancies, so be it.

Greatnan Tue 04-Dec-12 17:50:33

We certainly would not want any unkind or cruel comments, and I don't recall any 'antis', by which I presume you mean non-believers, ever making any on the spirituality thread, jingle. People have expressed sincerely held beliefs.
I hope nobody tries to turn this into another spiteful argument, using words like 'back stabbing' on totally inappropriate threads.

If there was a dedicated Forum for 'The Royalists' to please some G.N.'s, then fine. The same as if there was a thread for 'Republicans' to please some G.N.'s that would be fine too. They souldn't be set up just to stop G.N.'s from posting where they want to, just to appease a bias by a handfull of G.N.'s though, surely.

The point raised here was not only about the pregnancy, was it.

If all G.N's had to only post on either the Royalist thread or the Republican thread, where would that leave the other forums? Nobody would have started a thread on the likes of 'In the news', 'A.I.B.U.' or, Chat', would they because someone would tell them to go to designated site as they think they are the thought police for G.N

POGS I didn't suggest a forum for Royalists, just for Royals as I thought it might be useful to provide a forum for this particular subject, whether people want to post about the queen, Prince Harry, the succession, Kate's pregnancy, The York princesses or whatever. I didn't suggest it as a forum of apartheid or censorship. Nobody was talking about thought police – just a bit of administration and tidying up. I don't care because I don't have any enthusiasm for the House of Windsor – but some people, possibly even quite a few, do.

Isn't part of the point to debate? If it is a 'royalist' or 'republican' only thread it would be in danger of getting pretty dull as everyone would basically agree and not have ther ides /views challenged..which I think is a good thing!

absentgrana Tue 04-Dec-12 18:06:01

POGS When I joined Gransnet which I think was earlier than you, there was no forum for sport. Gransnetters suggested that one would be a good idea. It's the same thing. Those people who hate sport, are opposed to a particular sport such as boxing or steeplechase, or resent the amounts of money paid to sportsmen can still post about these things if they want to, just as much as those who adore horse racing, follow Andy Murray or loved the Olympics can post.

Absent

You started this thread I tought to ask for opinions which is precisely what I have given to this thread.

I think I am happy with the points I raised. It is obviously upto others to read, or not read, into the wording and feeling we have both used as I hope you will agree.

Greatnan Tue 04-Dec-12 18:35:07

I think having one thread for all Royal-related subjects is a very good idea. Of course, any member would be free to post on it, whether they were for or against having an hereditary head of state. It is just an inconvenience to have to open several different threads about the same subject. (I realise that the current batch were just posted almost concurrently).

absentgrana Tue 04-Dec-12 18:39:49

Thank you Greatnan and quite a few earlier posters who saw what I was talking about. There are times when I think I should just go and shoot myself because of the conniptions that sometimes ensue from a very simple, straightforward post.

JessM Tue 04-Dec-12 19:01:28

Don't do that absent please.
I think it is perfectly clear what you intended. A Royalty topic area like there is a Sport one. Will help those interested to keep track.
