Overcoming fears

I've done it! I've driven on white stuff. It has taken me nearly three years to summon up the courage even when I know our current car can do it. Didn't even need the "diff locks" engaged (or is it unengaged?) either. Phew.

The fear
Steep hill
Road
Sea wall
Cold water

Three years ago one wheel hit an ice patch on a bend and, even on the level, the car somersaulted over the sea wall, broke a wheel axle and a few other things but, fortunately, not people. As luck would have it, the tide was out.

Nightmares for DD. Ongoing fear for me.

It's good to be recovering.

That has given me an idea, hilda. I think I might ask for such a present some time.

My husband used to do a lot of driving before he 'semi' retired and quite a few years ago asked for a day of skid pan training as a birthday present. He had great fun and its been very useful and reassuring to know that he's confident on icy or wet roads.....I dont need to drive much but his advice has given me confidence too.

Well done Bags, I admire you as I am not so brave, but not tested so far this year.

Well done Bags I am impressed

Bags Well done to get over that one. I got used to driving to work on ice and snow in the winters of 09/10 and 10/11. 20 miles an hour in 2nd gear, no sudden movements. I am increasingly scared of walking on icy pavements now though.

Bags well done you! It's a lovely feeling to have subdued that kind of fear (won't say conquered because in my experience that takes some time). Glad you're home safe and well. smile

Yes! Well done Bags, snow and ice can be very daunting even if you haven't had a nasty experience. Hope dd is happier too!

Greatnan Wed 12-Dec-12 21:48:16

Bags - well done. I googled ' how to drive on snow and ice' and got some good tips but it sounds as if you don't need them now you have found your confidence.

Back home successfully, dead chuffed. Nothing but having got to a time when I was ready made me do this, which is pleasing. I didn't want to have to cope with such a 'first' in an emergency – ambulances, unless they are four wheel drive, can't get up to our house - too much heavy equipment weighing them down; we know this from when DH's mum needed some treatment - the paramedics had to walk up and leave the ambulance at the bottom.

We made shelters at Cubs out of cardboard boxes and old sacks, and then played mad games involving spoons.

Thank you again for the encouragement. Gransnet is Grrrreat! grin

Well done Bags.

Did you manage to get into 2nd gear, especially with your eyes shut!. grin

Snowgran, Bags. Also Snowgran, Greatnan as she has posted her arrival at granjura's on Facebook.

Bags Wed 12-Dec-12 17:41:27

Thank you, everyone! It has snowed a little since then and I have to go out to Cubs this evening. All together now: Fingers Crossed!! [I'll-be-fine emoticon] [makingprogress emoticon] [no, really, I can do this] etc.

Well done bags a hurdle overcome!

I once slid sideways down a steep slope only to see a lorry doing the same thing from the opposite direction. Luckily we both stopped just short of each other. I had no option but to drive again as I had to pick the children up later along the same road but I never enjoyed that drive again even in summer sun.

Ariadne Wed 12-Dec-12 13:05:25

Well done, Bags! It terrifies me after a couple of horrid experiences on the M2..

flowerfriend Wed 12-Dec-12 12:54:23

Hats off to you Bags.

whenim64 Wed 12-Dec-12 12:48:41

Respect Bags! Having slid across two side streets on snow and ice, I can only guess how you have been dealing with the experience of somersaulting in your car. Scary! flowers

Movedalot Wed 12-Dec-12 12:17:25

Well done you! smile. I know how hard it can be to overcome such a fear. Give yourself a big pat on the back
