I still don't know how to pronounce 'eshew' Help anyone?
I think so many of us read a lot as children, but talked and listened a lot less, hence the problems.
I remember one of my uncles saying 'san fairy anne' when he just didn't care about something. I asked what he was saying and he spelled it like that for me, and said it was French for "It doesn't matter". He was right, but he'd never have pronounced it correctly if he'd known, as I learned later, that he was saying "ca ne faire rien'.
I had a problem with the word 'newsagent', pronouncing it in my head 'news a gent' ie with a short 'a' in the middle. Well, we called the place the paper shop where I grew up.
