Decorations down and away!

For many years now we've started the New Year by taking down ALL the decorations, tree, cards etc on January 1st. The house is back to 'normal' and everything seems fresh and uncluttered. There's just a couple of Christmas bags in the corner with presents that need putting away [ours] or delivering blush. We started it after my dear old mum died shortly before Christmas. I had no heart for all the trappings and just wanted everything down as soon as was possible. I do it now to make a fresh start to the year. Does anyone leave them up until the 6th? I can't imagine now, going back to work and coming home to a house still bedecked with lights and tinsel.

Marelli Sun 06-Jan-13 16:08:27

...but how do you know this, Ana [fearful emoticon]?

Ana Sun 06-Jan-13 16:04:59

Marelli, it's OK to take the decorations down before 12th night. Just not after it. So you'll be fine...smile

anno, Ana gave me a lot of guidance on when 12th night is/was wink. Hence, I had my decorations down a couple of days before I would normally do. I'm very superstitious and am still quaking at what may befall me.....hmmgrin

I gritted my teeth and managed to get my decs from the spare room into the loft.
I was dreading it, as my last sortie into the loft was when a dead mouse (in trap) fell on my head when I pulled the trapdoor down!

Crib now down and put away so Christmas is officially over in this house! grin. Dentist and hygienist tomorrow (ouch!) and then it is back into the normal routine once more sad or happy? confused

I couldn't find the tinsel this year so just used those red bead things. So no tinsel problem.

crimson Sun 06-Jan-13 13:45:33

It's only a few needles and I feel quite good having to get the vacuum out!

Ana Sun 06-Jan-13 13:39:44

grin crimson - is it actually supposed to do that? Shed needles, I mean?
I find tinsel is the worst, I'll be finding little bits of glittery stuff that the hoover's missed for months now...hmm

I have been looking up Epiphany and Twelfth Night on Wiki and am more confused now than when I started!

crimson Sun 06-Jan-13 13:28:57

I've got a 'pretend' tree that's so realistic it sheds just a few needles each year. How cool isthat smile. I've got most things down; could take days/weeks/months before it all works it's way into the loft, though.

Well, I'm just contemplating taking my bling down for another year. I am now wishing I accepted the 5th as Twelfth Night as it would all have been done. The bit I'm really dreading is dragging our oversized tree through to the back yard via the kitchen, and the traditional stripping off of needles as it squeezes past the white goods and sweeps precious china from every surface. Followed by my other half's asthmatic wheezing after I've swept up said needles along with the 12 days of Christmas dust. Then the final hoovering and the traditional unblocking of the needle-congested vacuum cleaner....

DP and I have spent today arguing if it should be the 5th or 6th! 1 believe it is the 6th as many countries do celebrate this date as 12th night. I like to keep them as long as possible as they never go up until just before Christmassmile

Lilygran yes , think she may have point .

Nonu Sat 05-Jan-13 14:47:37

Everything away now . House looks quite bare but in a pleasant sort of way .

Anno shock I could never think of doing that re , cards .

I don"t think !!

annodomini Sat 05-Jan-13 14:13:12

All I need to do now is somehow to untangle a length of tinsel from the living room light fitting and check up on who sent me Christmas cards and whom I can take off next year's list.

Anyone else seen this? www.telegraph.co.uk/topics/christmas/9778402/Why-have-we-cut-short-the-12-Days-of-Christmas.html

MaggieP Sat 05-Jan-13 13:35:57

Just put all decorations etc upstairs waiting for DH to put into the roof. Amazing amount of dust everywhere now!
We always try and get them down before 6th and I have to clear cards to give me space for my birthday cards... Well, less birthday than Christmas cards anyway!

baubles Sat 05-Jan-13 13:07:40

Done! The house has been de-christmassed smile

I wind the lights like a ball of wool, never have any problems unwinding them.

Anne58 Fri 04-Jan-13 20:00:24

We wind all sets of lights round the cardboard tubes from wrapping paper. I think we are probably still using the same tubes from about 6 years ago!

Grannylin Fri 04-Jan-13 18:32:53

Christmas cake all gone! problem is, I think I'm the only one who ate it blush
