I expect it will be sore tomorrow, marelli, kitty, when I forget and apply my hairbrush a bit too vigorously (it's right next to my hairline), and the guy who applied a piece of micropore tape said to make sure I take the tape off in the right direction (skin flap, eek) . I think I'll just let it come off by itself! It wasn't a hard bump but I expect I was quite a spectacle tumbling about

Sigh! I did read it through before posting.

Fell over while carrying my archery rucksack, a picnic basket, a shoulder back and some target faces. My knee and my forehead broke my fall. I'm fine but for a very visible graze. Then a good day's archery including learning how to make a bowstring for a longbow and shooting six arrows with someone's newly restrung longbow. Kind of her to let me

I think my mum had a problem with me. I was a honeymoon conception - perhaps an intruder on her marriage. Of course this was never expressed and in every way she seemed a loving and attentive mother to all of us. However, she was envious of my education because she had to give up school prematurely and help at home. Nothing was ever expressed but I felt it. She said something incomprehensibly callous when DS2 was in SCBU after he was born and I found it very hard to forgive and even harder to forget. But she's been gone for 30 years and I have had to let it go. She had her reasons.

I and mine mix with anyone if they're nice.

I think lots of people will empathise one way or another and, if it helps us to be different with our own, that must be a good thing.

My mother just seemed/seems to be permanently disappointed, and disapproving, of Dad, me and my elder brother. Youngest brother was the bees knees and still is. I wasn't really allowed to mix with the village children but had I great time if I ever achieved it.

On the subject of parents f*****g you up, has anyone read 'The Glass Castle' by Jeannette Walls?

They are common! NOT US. GOD FORBID!

The only thing my parents wanted was that we succeeded academically!
I don't remember anything else but the continual grind of study, revision and exams.
I remember once when the daughter of a family friend 'had to get married', my mother told me she'd rather murder me than have that sort of shame brought on the family.
The only hobby I had was reading. As I was at boarding school, I didn't know anyone in the holidays.
Also my mother looked down on the local children and I was not allowed to mix with the ad they 'weren't our sort. And we're common!'

My children love to quote that poem to me, cheeky lot! I empathise too, jeni. My parents had no emotional vocabulary - the four of us would joke that we were all treated fairly....with the same amount of indifference.

jeni I really felt for you with that post, I got what you meant straight away. Very true about mums! I have very mixed views about mine, basically emotionally caring, but so much other stuff in which in many ways were quite neglectful.
It helps to acknowledge that parents can be difficult people. As per Philip Larkin.
