Jess, I think Mey probably was serious and is of the school of thought which believes parents should not be criticized (at least not in public!). Surely she's entitled to express her opinion, whether we agree or not?

Just think it a bit strange ana, when in the middle of a discussion about irritating things that mothers say that wind up their adult daughters, for mey to pull one of those sayings out of the hat and address it to jeni . So I thought she might be being humorous. But without the clue of an emoticon I can't tell.
If serious, well, not sure, jeni certainly has the right to express negative feelings about her late (?) mother and one might argue, has a right to express them without being told off for doing so. If members want to say that their mothers were all kinds of horrible things I think that, as they are adult women of a mature age, then that's their right.
So, confused, I am.

One very good thing has happened! Tonight I received an email from an American pen pal with whom I lost touch a good 50 years ago. She managed to track me down because of my very unusual maiden name. There's going to be a lot of catching up to do.

I met up with my childhood friend, after 40 years, about 9 years ago. We had known each other since I was 2 and were like sisters, and now we are just as close again. We talk for hours, sharing all those years we were apart.

I was only thinking tonight [because of the thread about America] of the time when I had a couple of American penfriends and I was having a nostalgiafest about 'zipcodes' the the excitement of having airmail letters coming to the house.

I seem to be perfecting the art of doing sweet b***er all these days! Of course superglue on my bum in front of the laptop, default setting Gransnet, hasn't helped Is this addiction?

I'm not upset about the things my mum says any more - I can laugh about them now. But, I agree with jeni, I offer help to my children, am here if they need me and always say the right thing!!

On a more positive note, we had a fabulous meal cooked by DS1! We had yakatori chicken, sticky rice and steamed veg followed by homemade gf chocolate bread and butter pudding. After everything he has coped with, we were really thrilled.

Thank s GA - but it was brilliant to see how far he has come as he loved cooking before and is doing lots again now - and it tasted great.
