Advice re Cars

I have got a Honda Jazz.
In the past I have changed my car every 3 years as I did 20,000 plus miles a year.
My present car has 4 years free servicing and 4 years guarantee and I am now only doing about 9,000 miles a year.
I can extend the guarantee to 5 years for £450 and if I sell it just before the 5th year I will not have it serviced at that point.
The garage has told me cars do not usually go wrong before 5 years but they do get the odd one which requires a very expensive repair ( £1500 to £2000) but even they have pointed out it is an insurance and Honda make a profit out of it.
I have noticed depreciation is a lot less between years 3 and 5 but I do know tyres and brakes will have to be replaced.
Is it cost effective to keep a car for 5 years instead of 3? looking at it on a year by year basis?.

I don't think you see that much depreciation now in smaller cars as everyone is concious of the lower insurance premium and lower running costs incurred, and I think that if you decide on a bigger car you really do have to stand any depreciation that occurs it's just a case of swings and roundabouts. When I worked full time I had to make sure my cars where in good condition and changed them every 3yrs on lease through the Companies I worked for but now that I have my own little Audi sports I don't care if it depreciates at all I just love it I can afford it and it's all mine.

I'm looking for a newish car. Thinking about a 7-seated so can get all 4 GC in at same time. Must be economical etc.
Any suggestions? [hopeful emoticon]

Hi Nanado, I put on another thread how much I like my Nissan Qashqai which has two extra, forward facing, seats that fold up from the boot. We have it because we need the space for a wheelchair and haven't used it for children yet. It's a nice car, quite economical considering it's size and has a panoramic roof window that makes the inside very light. I said on the other thread that the thing that sold it to us was the fact that the roof window is strong enough to support a bear. grin

Thanks kitty. I had a Nissan once and found it an unexciting but very reliable car.
Do you have problems with bears? confused

We have just swapped our six and a half year old Citroen C5 estate for a Ford Fiesta Titanium - quite a size drop.
They say all sorts about Citroen but our experience was good - no trouble and needed to do nothing except normal wear and tear. The biggest job was to have the particulate filter replaced - after 60K miles - to do with the Diesel engine and does need doing then and costs £200 - and a fuse on the suspension - apart from that OK. We had the car valued several times for exchange - the huge drop was about three years but after that not huge drops.
We did consider another Citroen - a C4 hatchback - after all the calculations the money we had to put in was within a couple of hundred whether we bought the Citroen or the Ford.
Interestingly it does not look as if our insurance premium will be significantly less but at the moment there is no Road Tax but I gather the boundaries are due to change and we may be caught then for a small amount.

Not many bears around Nanado but it made us smile when they used it as a selling point for the almost full length glass roof.

I couldn't cope with toooo exciting but this car isn't boring. smile
