DH is getting ready to go and see DS1 and go to a football match with him tonight. He will stay overnight and get to play with our grandsons then come home in time to take me to a concert tomorrow night. Nothing wrong with any of that but he is usually my sounding board but if I say anything he won't go.

I am so fed up with the pain from my lower back getting worse and not better. I am in a minority of one in thinking it is nothing to do with my spine but is something abdominal. If I stand up for even 15 minutes it hurts so badly and the only way to stop it is to lie down but I can't spend my life on the sofa! It sometimes even hurts just from sitting down. I don't think it is my spine as movement has no effect on it at all and I can lift heavy things without it making any difference. Being vertical is the only cause! There are no sharp pains, just acute lower back pain and what feels like period pain.

We have to drive for an hour to get to the concert tomorrow night and then I will have to get straight out of the car and into the hall and sit down immediately. I am not sure I will even be able to manage the journey there, let alone sit there all evening and then come home.

I don't want to moan to friends or family as I am such rotten company at the moment that I don't want to see anyone but I am no good at bottling things up so need to get it out somehow. Sorry to anyone who has read this far.

I have an appointment to see the doc again on Monday afternoon and the physio I know and will see privately is away until Monday so I don't think there is anything I can do but sit here feeling terrible.

Fortunately I don't have any chocolate, biscuits or anything else unhealthy in the house!

I doubt it is life threatenting and know that many of you have really terrible things to cope with but that just doesn't seem to be any consolation at the moment. So sorry, not usuually a whinger.

Hi everyone - here is my update:

Yesterday I had the ultrasound scan, both externally and internally and was told he couldn't find anything wrong but thought I had a kidney stone. He did an x-ray and I have stones in both kidneys but they are not very big and are not causing a problem. He told me to go back to the GP and ask him to look at my cervix and arrange an MRI scan. We went out for lunch and then went to the GP who looked at my cervix and it looked fine. He is arranging for me to have an x-ray as the NHS doesn't go straight for MRIs. He said I should take the co-codamol half an hour before doing anything which requires standing up for more than a few minutes and then do whatever it is but don't stand up for too long.

Last night I read the labels on the meds and discovered that they should not be taken with the other meds I am on, nor by someone hypothyroid! This seemed odd because I trust my GP. Phoned the paharmacy this morning and discoved that nothing too serious will happen as long as I leave a gap between taking them and am prepared to be very sleepy as the dosage is higher than normal. I have told DH to expect me to be even dozier than normal!

So I was wrong to think that the back pain was referred from the period pain and it is the other way round. I had got myself into a bit of a tizz thinking about my mother's cancer and that I hadn't had a smear for a while as I am too old.

I still don't have an answer to the cause of the pain but I have stopped worrying about the cancer. Just have to dose myself up and get on with it. At least I now have an excuse for any stupid behaviour. Perhaps I should make the most of it grin

Thank you all so much for all your support. I really appreciate it. smile

Moved it would be good if you would pm someone (if you want to) just to let them know how you are doing, and perhaps we can give you some space to post when you are more ready?

Heart in my mouth when I saw you had posted and while I suspect you are not much the wiser, but at least things have started. I am very glad you are no longer so worried about the possibility of cancer, an understandble fear from which we all suffer. I hope the next round of tests/scans/Xrays will bring you closer to a solution - maybe it was the kidney stones and perhaps they are causing the pain. Don't quite get why you cant have an MRI scan right away, but I know different authorities vary and GPs don't always see their way clear to doing what hospital consultants take for granted.
Have as much rest as you can and know we are thinking of you flowers

flowers movedalot thinking about you; have a good rest and don't post if you feel too dozy!

I don't think x rays show up much; I couldn't walk for nearly 7 months and my x ray just said I had 'mild arthritic changes'. It was about 5 months before I got a scan done on the knee. I started to [not for the first time] question my own sanity and began to think my pain threshold was zilch. Trouble with pain of any kind is it's so difficult to explain to someone else.

glassortwo Thu 31-Jan-13 12:59:23

move that will have eased your mind a little. flowers

celebgran Thu 31-Jan-13 14:54:23

Just to re-iterate what DS said - he sees lots of people with your pattern of back pain and usually caused by specific muscles that need some rehabilitation . A good chiropractor or osteopath could check this out.

His tip if you want to go this route and do not want to be ripped off re prices:
call up the ones in your area
ask them how much they charge for a first appointment (that will include an assessment)
ask them if they normally advise an x ray

if they say yes to the routine x rays, put them in the "no thanks" pile.
And then the cheaper ones are the ones to go for. Not the more expensive ones.

Tegan Thu 31-Jan-13 16:53:29

It was a chiropractor that sorted my knee out.

Tegan Thu 31-Jan-13 16:54:49

And I still think you need to do the thing with the pillows [nag nag....]

Oldgreymare Thu 31-Jan-13 17:10:32

Just caught up and pleased that your mind is at rest re the big C, do take care and vary what you do. My osteopath (well the one I see) says never to do anything for more than an hour, so marathon ironing sessions etc are OUT!
He also says that your body can over- compensate for backpain but then can become stuck in a worse situation than before. (He words it more clearly than that!)

Thanks Jess If I decide to do that I will be happy to go to the one DH has seen and has confidence in. At the moment I'm sticking my head back in the sand and hopting it will go away. If it doesn't I will get stressed again and go and see a chiropracter.

Thanks everyone for all your kind posts smile

flowers from me too, so glad all going reasonably positively and looking better.
Take care x

j07 Thu 31-Jan-13 17:38:41

I don't think you will get anything privately that you aren't getting on the NHS. Most of the stuff, if not all, that chiropractors tell you is simple commonsense.

Beware wasting your money.

NfkDumpling Thu 31-Jan-13 19:42:16

Glad you're in the system. I paid for an MRI scan when I had a slipped disc. Same treatment only six months sooner. Ask your doctor / consultant for advise.

Grannyknot Thu 31-Jan-13 22:17:22

moved I agree with people on here who say that pain is subjective and the degree to which it is experienced by someone is difficult to convey to other people, my own experience has been (and I can also get myself into a real state sometimes, since my mother died of cancer) is that once I've been reassured that I am not on my last legs, the pain generally seems to improve as well! I'm not suggesting by this it isn't real, or really sore, but in my case, I think I focus in on it and that makes it worse. Good luck with next steps and recuperation flowers.
