ONE BILLION RISING. Will you give your support to women across the planet on 14 February?

Starting a fresh thread to keep the momentum. We all know the horrifying accounts of women raped by gangs of men in India, and that rape is as common in all parts of the world and most cultures (in fact, no culture that is rape-free has been identified).

Please lend your support to this momentous plan for women to rise up and demand an end to violence at the hands of men, on 14 February.

One Billion Rising is publicised on he internet, and you can find what's happening near you by checking Facebook. It's growing daily, so please share this with your friends.

Don't forget - Stella Creasy MP joins us on Wednesday for a live webchat about it all too - do ask a question - the thread is in Active

In Pakistan, women aren't allowed to dance in the street. One Billion Rising is awaiting some response to the campaign. Watch this space.

Thanks Bags. Really practical and achievable advice that we can all contribute to.

My daughter (42) grand-daughters, (18, 15, 13, 8) seem to know nothing about this. But they are supposed to be the ones who are globally connected. So why am I trying, belatedly, to involve them? And my daughter remembers going to Greenham when she was little. Peterborough or Northampton watch out if I can mobilise them. grin

My Facebook page is full of One Billion Rising supporters today. Lots of public organisation, sports and entertainment celebs jumping on board to declare their support.

On Thursday, I am going with a friend to an evening of dance, poetry, performances and testimonies for One Billion Rising. Getting to feel like something momentous is happening! smile

Flashmob outside Parliament tomorrow at 11am. Let's hope there's plenty of media coverage!

JessM Wed 13-Feb-13 12:36:38

Isnt that illegal? Special laws about "marching on parliament" - wonder if they apply to "dancing on parliament" grin
I'm envious of those who live in cities where something is happening.

whenim64 Wed 13-Feb-13 12:37:37

.....and another flashmob on the south bank at 2.30 pm!

whenim64 Thu 14-Feb-13 07:18:52

It's started on the other side of the world! Hope it's going to be a day to remember for years to come.

JessM Thu 14-Feb-13 07:29:40

Enjoy all you dancers and I hope it is a huge success. And that the rain stops for outdoor events. Those of us who are not can all do something. I am going to write to my MP.

Butty Thu 14-Feb-13 07:47:53

From Russia to Times Square to India and Australia, thousands of women are dancing and rising.
I'll be joining them.

I hope the snow and, more importantly, any ice have melted. I don't want to slip over, frighten the horses and causes a public incident.

whenim64 Thu 14-Feb-13 08:07:35

See all the flash mob dances on One Billion Rising's Facebook page. Great one on Main Beach, Byron Bay, Australia. Women across the globe turning up wearing red and pink, and inspiring everyone to take part. It's contagious! smile

Done it. Written to MP. Here's what I wrote

Dear ...
I hope you will be attending the debate today on statutory sex and relationship counselling. As the ex-chair of governors in xxx School I have always admired the outstanding work they do there. However it is an uphill task. Many of the girls are pressured to engage in sexual activity at a very young age (12-13). Great progress has been made at Leon in terms of reducing pregnancies. If you have time you would I am sure find it very interesting to spend half an hour with the excellent school nurse who could explain to you the realities of life for girls and young women.
I'd like to know whether you managed to attend the debate, or perhaps participated in one of the One Billion Rising events today.

It took me a whole 5 minutes to do this - using the website www.writetothem.com
just pop in your post code and up pops the form for emailing your MP.
