Should prisons be made harsher?.

Another thought I am having is prisons are not harsh enough to deter crime.
If beds were not provided and prisons were not heated this would save money and I am sure people would not offend again if they had to put up with these conditions for months or years.
There should be nothing like TV or any other non essential items.

Or is it women only ?

annodomini Thu 31-Jan-13 23:24:11

Well, if you're having a get-together in Birmingham, gracesmum... grin

HunterF Not this old chestnut again!

A big majority of those in prison would not be deterred by harsher punishment.

They probably do not imagine they are ever going to get caught, at their fraud, or drink driving, or dangerous driving. or bank robbery.

They are so desperate to get their next fix that is all they can think of.

Those in for fighting and other violence are so off their heads on strong lager they don't think at all.

They are suffering from borderline learning disability, or mental health issues. and can't make rational decisions.

They have suffered so much trauma and abuse already they don't know anything better or really care what happens to them.

We have to have prisons but I see no point in making them inhumane.

Don't be silly, Frank you can get books and records from the library - oh, but that would involve your council tax wouldn't it. Damn. Maybe they could be sentenced to single sex exercise classes. That'd teach'em!

I wished I had 3 cooked meals a day free of charge. They need to make prisons places which people would not want to return to.
They could also be located on a deserted island.
They could also have prison ships out at sea.

Me too, jingl, but I think the game's up now....hmm

Nonu Thu 31-Jan-13 22:46:31

Totally off the wall Frank , what part of Birmingham do you live ?[moon

gracesmum Thu 31-Jan-13 22:46:17

The prison population would also be drastically reduced if the luxury of food were withdrawn. I'm surprised HunterF hadn't got round to that yet.

The punishment is the taking away of a person's liberty. Not making their lives a complete misery. You need decent conditions, classes and worthwhile occupations, and areas for fresh air and exercise. And a good diet.

If this is a wind up, I have fallen for it.

Surely it is! hmm

HUNTERF Thu 31-Jan-13 22:39:01

Ana

The prisoners could sleep on a stone floor.
You are not expecting them to have lights in prisons are you?.
You will be expecting glass in the windows next.

Frank

gracesmum Thu 31-Jan-13 22:34:53

NfkDumpling Thu 31-Jan-13 22:34:00

Ana Thu 31-Jan-13 22:33:10

Frank, come on now - you're blowing your cover! I was inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt before, but seriously - no beds and no heating....grin

gracesmum Thu 31-Jan-13 22:32:27

Not my point, NFK - this is a wind up.

NfkDumpling Thu 31-Jan-13 22:29:35

Graceesmum don't forget most houses were a bit short of amenities too.
