I agree flicketyb . It is the same with cancer charities... I think i need to go off and start a thread on that actually

FlicketyB Thu 21-Feb-13 15:15:30

I used to be a volunteer with Age Concern (now Age UK) until the funding ran out for the scheme. Since then I have begun to feel more and more alienated from the charity, mainly as a result of the publicity surveys it does.

Age UK are forever publishing surveys too show how vulnerable poor and needy older people are and, yes, I do realise that many old people are poor, disabled and vulnerable, but so are many other sections of the population and many older people, particularly those in their 60s and 70s are none of these things. I think Age UK do a lot of harm to older people as a whole by constantly portraying us as needy.

I was particularly offended by a recent report suggesting that if you didnt see family members at least weekly and friends similarly you were living a lonely isolated life. I do not see my family weekly because none live anywhere near us, nor do I see close friends frequently for the same reason but DH are out and about taking part in activities involving other people almost daily while we are in daily email contact with both our children and frequently email other friends and family.

I would like to see more surveys coming out showing how much we contribute to the economy through taxes, how important the money we spend is to supporting local stores and the local economy because I am sure we are more likely to shop locally, whether we live in a rural or urban area.

While Age Concern keeps harping about how miserable it is being old and completely ignores the positives I really do not want Gransnet to be placing the Age Concern banner on the Gransnet site.

phoenix

I dunno, one minute we're AgeUK, next we're still being policed by Mums Net HQ!

Our Tech team have fixed this now blush

oo-er. Looks like a takeover. But who has takenover who? I think an explanation would be good.

Helloo. AgeUK have a link to Gransnet forums on their website, the only difference is, they have AgeUK banners and the latest block is tailored for AgeUK visitors.

If you log in as normal by going to www.gransnet.com/forums, your banners and headers should be normal. Might be easier to save it to your favourites, if you haven't done so already!

Marelli Thu 21-Feb-13 09:52:00

I've had the normal header all the time - I think so, anyway.

Galen Thu 21-Feb-13 08:36:50

Normal one back again now.

annodomini Thu 21-Feb-13 08:21:30

I still have our normal header and have never had anything else.

kittylester Thu 21-Feb-13 07:29:51

Gransnet starting hosting the Age UK forum for them a while ago, shortly after GN took over the Oldie's Borum Forum. It's all the one forum now, no matter which heading you use or which direction you come at it from.

Wtih the Age uk thing, it could be a tax dodge! shock (not really!)

Jess I agree that doing kind things for people much older than us is the image of AgeUK, but it's far from the reality. It's a campaigning organisation, and they also have a research branch, which came about when the smaller charity Research into Ageing was taken over by Age Concern as it then was
www.ageuk.org.uk/professional-resources-home/research/research-into-ageing/
Just up your street I would have thought smile
They carry out very worthwhile projects and I have supported them for the last 15 years, since my mum died with vascular dementia.
I do agree though, that the AgeUk banner seeems strangely offputting........

JessM Wed 20-Feb-13 21:58:23

I think Ageuk is still associated with "Help the Aged" in people's minds. It merged with Age Concern, a few years ago to form AgeUK. To be honest I don't see myself as part of the AgeUK target age group. In my mind it is a charity aimed at doing kind things for housebound 80-90 year olds. I know I am not alone - I was talking to someone about my age (early 60s) the other day about wanting to learn a few more computer skills. I said that AgeUK locally run courses and she made a face and said there was no way she saw herself going there.
is this just agism in our minds maybe? Or is it the profile of the charity?
And what next? A strategic alliance with The People's Friend maybe?

Elegran Wed 20-Feb-13 21:47:05

I think there has always been some connection between age Uk and Gransnet.

Why do/does any of us go onto Google to log in? I've got Gransnet Active Pages on my favourites bar.

janeainsworth Wed 20-Feb-13 21:26:57

you only get the AgeUK thing if you click on this google link

"Gransnet forums
