I was looking for a forum on which to put only good news as I have had a nice bit of news today myself. However, I couldn't find one so here it is. No grousing, no disasters, just good news. Oh yes - my good news concerns my DiL who has today been interviewed for and been successful in getting a new job as assistant head teacher of a highly successful comprehensive school. She deserves it - she has a brilliant track record in her present school both as a subject teacher and as a manager. When I spoke to her, she was deservedly enjoying wine.

This is the webpage (I hope) if anybody is willing to vote for my grand-daughter (but only if you agree her story is the best!)

Galen Tue 12-Mar-13 20:03:14

Good luck to her!

My grand-daughter has got into the seven finalists in a Love Story competition run by the Nelson newspaper and a Wedding company. Now I want all my friends to vote for her and I will ask my daughter how to post a link!
She has already got a voucher for NZ$600 for jewellery, and could win another $1,000. She is in her third year of nursing training and works long hours at an old people's home to fund her studies. Her fiance, who joined her here in NZ, works as a personal trainer and will probably study physiotherapy after Lara starts work as a nurse. They are a very deserving young couple - both still only 20 but with a very clear idea of where they are going!

Enjoying everyone's good news. Here is another bit, which proves we CAN make a difference. I got this e.mail this afternoon -

^Two weeks ago Steve started a petition asking Lego to drop their partnership with The Sun while the paper still carried topless pictures on page 3.

He had been inspired by Lucy's No More Page 3 campaign (that you've signed) and was appalled that Lego were advertising toys right next to images of topless women.

Over 12,000 people joined him and on Thursday The Guardian reported that Lego had said last week's promotion would be its last, acknowledging the pressure that the petition had.

Lucy said "Steve's campaign shows that if you feel passionately that something isn't right, chances are you're not the only one, and if you speak out, you really can affect change! This sends The Sun a strong message that it's time to end Page 3."

Keep supporting the No More Page 3 campaign by sharing this link with your friends change.org/nomorepage3 or if there's something you want to change you can start your own campaign just like Steve & Lucy have done here.

Thanks,

Brie and the Change.org team^

sook That's very good news. I know how frightening it is when your sight is threatened, as my diabetic son is slowly losing his vision and has regular laser/implants/injections.
Thankfully, the rest of him is remarkably healthy smile

I am so happy smile I had an eye test this morning and my sight is normal and best of all there is no pressure building up inside my eye.

Back in January I was diagnosed with a condition known as Narrow Angle Lens which is a form of Glaucoma. Within a fortnight of diagnosis both eyes were treated by laser, this involved making a microscopic hole in the top of each iris to allow excess fluid to drain away. Untreated the condition would have eventually resulted in me losing my sight. I have a follow up appointment at the local Eye Clinic later this month. I could have danced a jig at the good news grin

It confirms that the continents were all joined together at one time, then the inhabitants went their different ways.

Another interesting thing is that the tapirs in forests in the area from Myanmar to the Malay peninsula are black and white, as are the pandas in China (not that far away - the Panda Centre at Chengdu is in the southern part of China). Adaptations for breaking up their outline among the trees to hide from the tigers?

annodomini Mon 11-Mar-13 10:07:54

Their distribution is fascinating. Your picture is a Malayan one but there are several species of tapir in South America which is a long way from Malaya.

Tegan I think they are related to the horse. Not exactly Arab stallion racehorse proportions, though. They are more aqua-dynamic, they like a good swim.

Renaming zoos to "Wildlife Parks" might be a good bit of PR. Too many people still believe that all zoos keep animals in tiny barred cages. Admittedly there are some in less up-to-date countries which have not yet caught up, but there are endless associations and regulations in Britain, Europe, and worldwide to improve living conditions and welfare. BIAZA EAZA WAZA IZE and so on.

Movedalot Mon 11-Mar-13 10:00:45

sunflower what a relief! I am so happy for you. Onwards and upwards now. [flower]

Well done elegran sounds like a very satisfying project. Sorry no idea about the software.

I have a small but meaningful good thing to report. My youngest DS was outside the coutry yesterday but skyped me and then in the evening I got a lovely Happy Mothering Sunday text from his fiancee. It was so completely unecessary as they had taken us out on Monday already and it is not even MD where she comes from. Such a sweet and thoughtful girl.
