Rory is in trouble!

Last evening, Rory went outside to sit alongside his wifelet-that-was and adult daughter [both have been spayed]. It's a ritual. They sit and stare, and once the visitors have eaten, off they go into the forest, and in comes Rory. Another black cat was spotted in the garden a couple of nights ago. Tough and youthful in appearance. We wondered was it an offspring of Rory's?

Rory was late, so I called him to come in. When he eventually reached the back door he was in one hell of a state.confused He had either been hit by a car or he had had an almighty big scrap with another cat and he was DRENCHED almost as if he'd been under water [the burn is close by]. His back leg was dragging. His nose bloody. He kept shaking his head, and we noticed that something has torn hair out from behind his ear.

Naturally, we need to get him to the vet. He refuses to be handled. We cannot get him anywhere near the cat carrier. The vet is 24 miles away. I've spoken with the vet and she is to phone me back after two. Talk about distressed...sad

Just read the news soop - pleased Rory is home and making a recovery. What a traumatic time for you all. Positive thinking all round now. I'm sure with the wonderful vibes from GN and all the loving care and attention from you and Mr Soop he will be fine flowers

I've only just seen this thread soop what a horrible thing to happen. I'm so glad he's recovering. We have a horrible grey tom that terrorises ours every few weeks, my youngest one is terrified of him. Our oldest one has had a couple of big fights with him and been really off colour for several days, no actual injuries, just beaten up.
Hopefully antibiotics and tlc will works wonders flowers

smile Rory would be so flattered if he knew that he had umpteen get-well messages. I'm grateful to you on his behalf. THANK YOU.

He still isn't doing anything beyond sleeping. The swelling is about the same. He looks very lack-lustre and sorry for himself. He didn't pester to go out to sit with the girls at suppertime. He didn't open and eye and rush to discover what had triggered the light sensor outside. Which is just as well shock as lurking behind Rory's upmarket apartment [that is now unoccupied] was the black cat with youth and muscle in his favour hmm We cannot be certain that it was he that attacked and dunked Rory in the burn [seems very unlikely] but he is a threat and favourite to win a scrap for territorial rights.

Mr soop jumped from his chair and rushed to the back door. He opened it with an almighty wham bang and raced into the garden like a screaming banshee. The intruder fled into the forest. Mr soop returned looking every bit the hero and whispered to Rory..."that saw him off, big boy!"

A friend has just arrived to do a spot of work on the outside of the house. He thinks that Rory's injuries are the result of a larger, stronger animal such as mink that do live in this are, rat or indeed, a fox.

OMG soop! Only just seen this! Hope he is fit as a fiddle again soon.

Would he have got away at all if it had been a fox? Sounds like a fight to me. Perhaps he was near the burn when it happened and they got too close. Whatever happened, I hope he's better soon. I know how much you can love a cat that has adopted you. flowers

Thank dear jingssmile I doubt that Rory would have escaped from a fox. Far too powerful, compared with boy-cat. I'm sure that, had Rory not returned home after the attack, he would have succumbed to infection and died. It's hard to see him looking so forelorn, but as many GN's have said, cats are extremely resilient. He's a bold character. He'll recover, and when he does, I shall post a photo to prove it. Members of his fan club deserve as much wink

Thanks for the update, soop. All Rory's fans are at his virtual bedside, willing him back to good health. smile

I must admit when I saw the thread title I thought, how can he be?! He's been neutured! blush

j08 Wed 13-Mar-13 15:08:05

How do you spell it?! Cos that's not right. hmm

Ana Wed 13-Mar-13 15:10:19

neutered

j08 Wed 13-Mar-13 15:13:52

That's it! All the e' s and the u' s!

soop Wed 13-Mar-13 15:17:32

You had me fooled for a mo' jings grin
You're right, Rory has been neutered. He's no longer aggressive...or seeking a mate but, should another cat try to take over his patch, I'm sure that he would object most strongly. Marelli [Twinkle Toes] mentioned polecat as being the possible aggressor. I'm thinking that she could be right.
We keep checking on the patient. He hasn't budged from his cushion all day. If we stroke him [gently] he purrs [softly]. That must be a good sign.

Hope Rory`s path to recovery continues to be smooth, poor lad, but lucky lad also, having you and Mr.Soop to love him.

soop Thu 14-Mar-13 13:55:54

Rory is still sleeping. He is eating, which is a good sign. He cannot rest the injured foot on the floor. The paw appears to very swollen. He hops from his cushion to his litter tray...and then he returns to continue with his recuperation. He enjoys being petted and rewards us with loud purrs. smile

Ana Thu 14-Mar-13 14:43:22

What a trooper! smile

Butty Thu 14-Mar-13 15:42:46

Glad Rory is on the mend soopsmile. Sleep is good medicine and as he's eating your chopped chicken delicacies and purrrring, he's probably enjoying his convalescence. grin

Marelli Thu 14-Mar-13 16:19:18

He's been a lucky boy, in more ways than one, soop. Hopefully when he's fully recovered, he'll be more wary of wandering into dodgy territory. Does he need to see the vet again?

numberplease Thu 14-Mar-13 16:21:34

He`s like any man, likes being pampered!

soop Thu 14-Mar-13 16:58:27

smile
The vet hopes that slow release antibiotics should help him to recover. He is sleeping soundly and shows no inclination to wander outside, thank goodness. The problem is, he isn't drinking his water. I googled 'cats that refuse to drink'. One suggestion - to give him the liquid in which tuna is canned. Off to Tesco tomorrow to get a supply. hmm

Butty Thu 14-Mar-13 17:58:30

soop We had a cat which didn't seem to drink, until we saw him drinking from the an old little puddle of water outside. As he is 'from the wild', try giving him a little rain water which he might prefer.

soop Thu 14-Mar-13 18:09:18

Thank you, Butty your suggestion is well worth a try. x

annodomini Thu 14-Mar-13 18:18:53

Tap water has additives of which cats are suspicious. How about that burn that he was thrown fell into? My late cats used to prefer puddles to the clean water I left out for them.

Bags Thu 14-Mar-13 18:24:41

Our chickens always preferred puddle water too, and the more moss and dead leaf gunk in it the better. We stopped putting clean water out for them eventually.

Next door liked my garden pond (but ran off when a frog jumped next to him! Big sissy)
