on Sunday, then I believe it will show that this country has lost any small semblance of moral decency it was holding onto. And that the heads of a national institution have let all thoughts of ethical reasoning go out of the window in favour of political correctness.

I can only hope that it doesn't make number one.

But, my God, this country has sunk to an all-time low.

Very sad.

Herewith an example of "sensible and sensitive statements":

Absent, if you don't like my stuffing threads don't fucking read 'em!

I agree with soop differences of opinion are becoming too personal on here.soop don't stay away too long.

j08 Mon 15-Apr-13 13:09:50

And thanks Nonu. smile

j08 Mon 15-Apr-13 13:05:17

And soop, thank you so much for your support. Means a lot. sunshine

Nonu Mon 15-Apr-13 13:03:48

Sel , not if she has any sense she won"t.

grin

Eloethan Mon 15-Apr-13 13:03:07

soop Are you suggesting, with your use of inverted commas ("debate"), that certain statements, j08's being one of them, fall into some sort of special category of statements that are unquestionably right and that it is therefore somehow "improper" to oppose them in any way?

Nobody has suggested that j08 was not entitled to have/have a right to express her point of view. It is in fact you who is suggesting that certain gransnetters are not entitled to have/have a right to express their opinions.

Nonu Mon 15-Apr-13 13:02:28

Soop, I know you have probably nipped off now , I will post anyway I am in accordance with you 110%

Sel Mon 15-Apr-13 13:00:14

soop it's sad you feel that way flowers I echo your thoughts. I love j08's posts, typically humorous and insightful. She often makes me laugh out loud. I'm sure she has many supporters but what seems to happen at times is there will be a group of one persuasion who appear to 'gang up' if there is no one online to counteract them.

From what I've seen j08 can handle herself in the ring and won't let the negativity upset her.

I am very puzzled by your comment, soop. I have followed this thread right through and read all the comments except the one that was deleted as not keeping within forum guidelines (and that one was by jings). I have not seen any spitefulness aimed at the OP at all. I have seen questions following comments of hers and I have seen arguments on both sides of the issue. I have also seen some spitefulness, but it wasn't aimed at Jingle.

I remain puzzled.

gillybob Mon 15-Apr-13 12:35:36

Lions, Tigers and Bears, Oh My grin

j08 Mon 15-Apr-13 12:22:30

soop Be back soon.

soop Mon 15-Apr-13 12:14:17

Jings opened this "debate" with a perfectly sensible and sensitive statement. She, like the rest of us, has every right to her point of view. I have loved coming to Gransnet over many months. I can recall some extremely happy and funny times shared. However, at the moment I'm depressed by all the continuing argy-bargying and spitefulness aimed at jings. Therefore, for a few days, I'm taking a rest from the forum.

They matter insofar as they tend to detract from what their users are saying. Also, once name-calling and/or silly negativity is resorted to it's a signal that the argument, whatever it was, has been lost by those person(s) because anyone with a strong argument doesn't need to be so childish.

Greatnan Mon 15-Apr-13 09:21:19

My feelings exactly, nanaej. flowers

nanaej Mon 15-Apr-13 09:11:32

The personal insults on forums do not matter to me. I would only be upset if they were made by people I knew, respected and cared about or if they damaged my reputation or were threatening.

j08 Mon 15-Apr-13 08:31:27

At least you show the odd flash of humour Greatnan sunshine

absent Mon 15-Apr-13 08:29:00

j08 You can suggest whatever you like and even use the passive in your post if you like, but it doesn't make what you have posted correct.

Greatnan Mon 15-Apr-13 08:16:21

Now, now, jingle, don't get personal -you know how sensitive I am. grin

j08 Mon 15-Apr-13 08:11:53

"I come late to this discussion"

Thank the Lord for small mercies.

j08 Mon 15-Apr-13 08:09:57

The word "disgusted" has been used here recently. May I suggest the alternative of "pompously"? smile

Greatnan Mon 15-Apr-13 08:08:57

I come late to this discussion but everything I would want to say has been said very eloquently by Micelf and others. I am just amused that Sel has managed to drag in the usual ill-informed criticism of teachers. She should try keeping a class of 30 15-year olds usefully occupied on a Friday afternoon - it is a damn sight harder than running a business. Unlike Sel, I have done both!

Is it being suggested that teachers should have no politcal beliefs -they would have to be pretty stupid for that to be true?

I am surprised that some of the very personal insults, all made by the 'outraged' parties, have not been deleted. Perhaps the victims are just too mature to be bothered by them.

It is odd how nobody complains when jingle uses 'bad' language. If I were her, I would be insulted.

I don't listen to anything about pop music, but I will now go and find the relevant programme - thank you for the reference.

j08 Mon 15-Apr-13 08:06:24

Can I just say that I agree with everything I have said on this thread bput I realise I should not have changed the name of Micelf to Ratself. Far too facetious for the stuffed shirts of GN police obviously.

petallus Mon 15-Apr-13 07:49:07

Exactly!

Bags Mon 15-Apr-13 07:40:56

Yes. And I've noticed that the people who are saying how awful and how cruel the silly song is are the ones who have said the most awful things on here. Pot. Kettle.....

absent Mon 15-Apr-13 07:15:27

What an appalling thread and what thoroughly appalling things have been said by some. And all of it over 51 seconds of a song from a musical film made over 70 years ago. Are Gransnetters more mature than Mumsnetters – if you judge by this thread, a lot of them are not even as mature as the Mumsnetters offspring. Never mind Ding Dong etc. being a disgrace. This thread is a real horror.

Yours,
Disgusted of Darlington
