on Sunday, then I believe it will show that this country has lost any small semblance of moral decency it was holding onto. And that the heads of a national institution have let all thoughts of ethical reasoning go out of the window in favour of political correctness.

I can only hope that it doesn't make number one.

But, my God, this country has sunk to an all-time low.

Very sad.

Galen Thu 11-Apr-13 18:47:24

What song are you talking about?

Ana Thu 11-Apr-13 18:49:58

The BBC should at least attempt to show a lack of political bias - but they're too busy trying to be contemporary and 'edgy'...hmm

gillybob Thu 11-Apr-13 18:50:13

I agree j08 pathetic isn't it? My son told me it was number 3 in the charts but said the BBC have banned it.

I love the Wizard of Oz film too. sad

Lilygran Thu 11-Apr-13 19:06:54

Galen there is a lobby to get 'Ding Dong, the witch is dead' from Wizard of Oz to the top of the charts. Do they still have charts? Whatever.

merlotgran Thu 11-Apr-13 19:10:53

MT has grandchildren in their twenties. How on earth must they be feeling?

Galen Thu 11-Apr-13 19:11:36

Disgusting!angry

gracesmum Thu 11-Apr-13 19:55:39

From what I have read there will be supporters on Gransnet.
Personally I think it is the lowest possible taste, but nothing surprises me.

Lilygran Thu 11-Apr-13 20:03:15

I think anyone who puts political ideology above compassion is a worry to the rest of us. And most of them weren't even alive when Maggie was in power! Anyone see the Labour Party political broadcast this evening? Ed said (visiting Acton FE College) that funding for ESOL classes had been cut 'in recent years'. When was your party in power, Ed? A plague on all their houses!

I have reported on another thread I was disgusted to see Jasmin Alihbhai Brown laughing on the Wright Stuff today. She was stating she was going to by it. The rugby player Kieran Bracken was another panelist and he was a total gentleman about it and very quietly told her what he thought about her.

Mind you also on that show she clapped like a sealion when a member of the public phoned in and said 'They should turn their back on the coffin when it passed them'.

It wasn't much better the day before when Ade Edmundson said about Margaret Thatchers funeral arrangements,'A black plastic bag will do'

Says an awful lot of our society.

absent Thu 11-Apr-13 20:33:10

Black plastic is not biodegradable but I am all in favour of wicker and cardboard coffins or just burying/burning bodies in a shroud, whether ex-prime ministers or members of the general public.

absent Thu 11-Apr-13 20:36:24

As for the "wretched song", that's all it is. Ignoring it and not making a fuss about something so utterly trivial would surely be the most effective way of silencing silly people. Censoring it renews their oxygen. Presumably all this brouhaha will die down fairly quickly after next Wednesday. I certainly hope so.

POGS Thu 11-Apr-13 20:41:17

Absent

Out of interest have you told your family that is your wish for your funeral. I rather like the wicker coffins myself.

Notso Thu 11-Apr-13 21:11:23

I've asked for a cardboard coffin and for the grandchildren et all to write/draw/graffiti on it grin

As far as 'the song' is concerned, I agree it's best ignored. Hard to do that though when it's such a disgraceful display of poor taste and insulting sentiment.

ginny Fri 12-Apr-13 09:06:34

Very bad taste, best ignored.

celebgran Fri 12-Apr-13 09:23:10

Totally agree jo8. It seems no one has the backbone to stand up for moral decency ! Those louts protesting are just that brainless louts pity they not busy working.

Margaret thatcher love her or loathe her was a mother and grandmother is utterly disgraceful to not respect their loss.

annodomini Fri 12-Apr-13 10:08:46

It is sheer stupid mischief-making rather than a political statement which, twenty years ago, it might have been. Most of the people who are buying the recording were either very young or unborn in the Thatcher years. It is best ignored, but the BBC is in a difficult spot. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't. Personally, I think they shouldn't.

absent Fri 12-Apr-13 10:50:16

It's a very short song. If the DJ talks a bit over the beginning and a bit over the end – as they do – there will be virtually nothing to hear.

The song itself is not, of course, offensive, except perhaps to witches and people who don't like The Wizard of Oz, so it would be political censorship to refuse to play it. Trivial enough on this count but setting a worrying precedent. Also not playing it just adds flame to the fire.

vampirequeen Fri 12-Apr-13 10:52:06

Taste is a matter of opinion. I love the song and if it's at Number 1 I expect it to be played. If people had downloaded the Funeral March would that have been more acceptable.

Why show respect in death to someone I had no respect for in life. If she doesn't like it she can always come back and haunt me.

annodomini Fri 12-Apr-13 11:06:24

vampirequeen, I agree with your sentiments about Lady Thatcher, but I do have sympathy with her family. I feel sure that she was a loving and loved grandmother and I hope her grandchildren are not listening to some of the celebratory venom being spilt about her death. As far as I am concerned, she died long ago.

soop Fri 12-Apr-13 11:13:22

I agree wholeheartedly with jings...sad angry I'm taking a day away from Gransnet.

vampirequeen Fri 12-Apr-13 12:05:10

I doubt her family give a damn about what we plebs think.

Carol Thatcher makes no secret of how she was pushed aside by her mother and that her brother was the golden child.

Neither of them exactly rushed back did they. The day my dad died I dropped everything and travelled to where he was even though I had to borrow the money to get there.

ginny Fri 12-Apr-13 12:20:02

Absent Whilst the song was not originally offensive. The whole point is that now it is. We should not cannonise MT just because she is dead but there are people who have done far worse than her and none of the good.

sunseeker Fri 12-Apr-13 12:22:39

As long as the presenter does not link the song to Mrs Thatchers death then they should play it. How many people actually listen to the "Top 40" show in any event. All the people who have downloaded the song have done is to line the pockets of Sony (I think). Most people will just ignore it.

I am more concerned about a report on local radio this morning that a local Conservative party office has been attacked by vandals.

absent Fri 12-Apr-13 13:17:12

ginny The song is not offensive. The way it has been used could be regarded as offensive and is certainly distasteful but that doesn't make the song offensive per se.
