I've started a new thread so as not to be accused of deviation on the measles thread
I love a good prawn cocktail and am now going to make myself a low fat version one.
jingle I think that link looked super. I think I will modify that recipe.
Has anybody got any other interesting variations?

Galen That's the trouble with living in the south. Bury in Lancs is supposed to be one of the best producers. They will deliver to your door even in Somerset or Avon or wherever Portishead is these days.

I fancied a prawn cocktail the other evening but couldn't find the prawns in the freezer. I checked my handbag and the top of the wardrobe then noticed DH was looking guiltier than the Jack Russells when they've been playing 'Pass the Parcel' with a cauliflower. He had to admit he'd used them for fishing bait. Carp and perch, apparently, love them!! Bloody Hell!! Fish have expensive tastes these days. Whatever happened to worms?? shock

merlot, I have to ask - why on earth would the prawns be on top of the wardrobe? confused Or in your handbag, come to that.....grin

Go to Lidl for the prawns. A box of between 24 and 28 large king prawns £2.49! They are big, juicy and delicious. I use them for a Thai prawn curry and they stay really sort of "meaty" and don't disintegrate like the smaller ones.

I've also used them in prawn cocktail, lush!

Thanks Nelliemoser I've just ordered some!

Phoenix are they she'll on or off?

Nonu Sat 20-Apr-13 17:45:48

Ana , {smile] you are on top form tonight .

I love prawns, but I like them with mayonnaise in an avacado. Very calorific, so it has to be the main meal, with a mixed salad and two crispbreads. I also use them as a filling for a baked potato, and I pinched an idea from Juragran - I put them in a packet of Thai soup to add interest. They make a lovely chowder too.
I wish I hadn't read this thread - I have already eaten but I have a big bag of frozen prawns in the freezer...................

Join the prawn club!
Obviously a lot of us like prawns.
Anyone tried them mixed with cubed avocado chilli and cherry tomatoes .served on a bed of lettuce with a little lime juice?
Almost healthysmile

Nonu Sat 20-Apr-13 18:09:05

I can eat an avocado like an apple , with a little venegar and oil sprinkled on.

Greatnan Sat 20-Apr-13 18:09:55

Hm.....sounds tasty!
There are very few foods I don't like - we couldn't afford to be faddy eaters in the 1940's!

Sook Sat 20-Apr-13 18:23:55

My mouth is watering grin

annodomini Sat 20-Apr-13 18:26:29

Once I liked avocado with prawns until I worked out that it was the avocado that was giving me terrible stomach upsets. sad

merlotgran Sat 20-Apr-13 18:29:54

Ana, you would be amazed where things get put in this house. Whenever I lose my car keys the DGCs yell, 'Look in the fruit bowl.' They know me so well! grin

merlotgran Sat 20-Apr-13 18:31:19

Why of Why does an avacado have to be so high in calories? sad

Nonu Sat 20-Apr-13 18:33:16

Continuing with the fishy "theme"

Youngest was here the other week for the evening as it was her partners b"day so we had a mini celebration . They stayed over and she said she would cook breakfast the next morning.

She did scrambled egg, smoked salmon , not mixed in but on the side , capers , and raw onion . I thought I don"t think I can face raw onion at this time in the morning .

You know what, it was delicious .smile

Anne58 Sat 20-Apr-13 18:33:20

Galen sorry for the delay, they are shell off.

Lidl also do some frozen raw prawns, that I think are shell on, but not sure.

Anne58 Sat 20-Apr-13 18:35:16

I too use them in a chowder, along with Ldl's smoked haddock, some potato and a handful of frozen sweetcorn.

Many years ago I used to serve the prawn/mayo mixture on half a grapefruit. It was always well received.

Melt some butter in a pan, throw in some prawns, garlic, chilli. Cook it thru for 5 mins or so.S+P. Toss it together with some linguini.Chuck on a few herbs. Delish and so easy. smile

Smoked salmon with scrambled egg - lovely breakfast. Especially with a glass of champagne on special days.

Nonu Sat 20-Apr-13 19:47:23

Doesn"t have to be a special day for me to drink champagne ,

We have a bottle once a fortnight , and in between times if an occassion crops up , and it"s not Cava

Galen Sat 20-Apr-13 19:48:46

Nor me! In fact I've just tried to open a mini bottle ---- and failed!
Back to chianti!

Galen Sat 20-Apr-13 19:49:28

My supper was delicious btw!

Greatnan Sat 20-Apr-13 19:55:40

I don't drink it first thing in the morning unless it is a special day. Otherwise, I have it in the evening.
