I normally consider spring as arrived when I see jersey royals on the shelves.
I enjoy them steamed for about 20 minutes for meal, and also nice cold as well, when cooked.

I might be a heretic but I think the best small potatoes are Charlotte!

Gorki Mon 22-Apr-13 14:00:36

Agreed !

I read that because of blizzards/wind and damp weather they are going to be at least 2wks later than usual and they aren't expecting them in any abundance till late May.. and of course that will mean expensive as well..

Here's the article.. www.independent.co.uk/environment/nature/worst-weather-for-30-years-jersey-blizzards-prompt-potato-fears-8529842.html

I like to eat mine boiled in their skins, mmmmm!! Sprinkled with salt, although I know salt should be taboo. smile

Galen Mon 22-Apr-13 15:56:25

I like mine with loads of Brittany butter with salt crystalsblush

I asked my green grocer why they don't taste the same any more.
He said the taste came from the sea weed they put on the fields.
Anyone know any more about this.

glammanana Mon 22-Apr-13 16:06:51

When I asked the question why they didn't taste the same as years ago I was told that our taste buds change as we get older shock

shysal Mon 22-Apr-13 16:14:53

I am a Charlotte fan too. I tried growing some a couple of years ago but they were very disappointing, broke up on cooking, even when steamed. I think Monty Don had a similar problem that year, so I blame the weather. I am afraid for me new potatoes have to be served with lots of butter and salt, and cooked with a sprig of mint.

Jersey Royals haven't tasted "right" for a number of years. I was also told the taste came from the seaweed used on the land. I agree Charlottes are great in salads.

harrigran Mon 22-Apr-13 16:26:55

Thank goodness it's not just me that thinks they don't taste the same, when I was first married Jersey potatoes were delicious.

Ella46 Mon 22-Apr-13 16:34:22

I agree they haven't tasted really good for years, and I now buy Cheshire pots grown just up the road.

Ana Mon 22-Apr-13 16:36:24

I agree too - Cheshire or locally-grown new potatoes taste much better than Jersey Royals and aren't nearly as expensive!

Nelliemoser Mon 22-Apr-13 17:25:12

Leftover cold Charlotte potatoes sliced with a sprinkle of sea salt and mayonnaise. Eat surreptitiously! The little bit of guilt improves the flavour! Secrete a few extra ones away before serving the rest to your SOs. grin

Ella46 Mon 22-Apr-13 23:12:11

As I haven't got a SO Nellie that means I get to eat the lot!!
Yay!

I have just bought a 750g at tesco. Cost me four pounds but I couldn't resist so roll on tea time. This is the time I eat loads of potatoes as you can't beat new potatoes. My mum used to inform me when they where in the shops then the Cyprus then the best is Ayrshire new potatoes. Yum yum. Anne09

marigold1 Tue 23-Apr-13 16:32:51

Ayrshires first, Jerseys then Cyprus, served with butter and sprinkled with fine oatmeal...delish!!

Nostalgia strikes again - Ayrshire tatties - my dad grew them in the garden. We used to see the Clydesdale horses taking the carts down to the shore to collect seaweed to fertilise the fields. That made for unbeatable potatoes.
