It's like one of those things you can get from garden centres. Where it's supposed to have partly crawled out of the ground. Like a mole.

OR like the loch Ness monster (popping up out of the water)

Not favouritism, that means someone has given others a flag, but is denying you one. Mum, Mum, it's not fair!

More like inertia - if you want a flag, have a bally flag. Put one up outside your house and persuade others to fly one too. Start a campaign to restore pride in your country and fly its flag from every flagpole. But do it without jingoism and xenophobia.

I should have added dragondragon - have just spotted it!

Without a drop of English blood in me I suppose I must consider myself an immigrant. I think it is very sad that emblems of national pride have been hijacked by the lunatic fringe - BNP , pit bull fighting yobs, football hooligans et al. If you see a St George's flag hanging out of an upstairs window or a pennant on a car, do you think "Oh, wonderful, a true patriot"?? I don't think so! Come on you English, reclaim your national flag, St George, your patriotism in a positive way. We Scots, the Welsh, the Irish, the French all do it - I could go on for ever, but won't [whew] emoticon.
PS In Stratford for opening night of DD's As You Like It on Saturday - so much going on in the town for Shakespeare's birthday weekend etc and it was wonderful - the good side of Englishness!

Make more of it? Not at all - we traditionally observe St George's day by ignoring it completely - let the lesser breeds demonstrate their inferiority by dancing in the streets and letting off fireworks on their pathetic patron saint's days - we are the English! Upper lips stiff, lower ones kept under control, we survey the world from our dizzy height...

Crumbs, crikey, Christopher Columbus, you'll be wanting us to put our name on the stamps next...

On this day about 50 years ago my very young son ,who had heard this on the radio, came running into the kitchen saying,'' Mummy, Mummy,. it's Shakespeare's birthday! Can we go to his party?'' His sister who is 22 months older , said,'' Don't be silly! It's much too far.'' I don't remember many of the funny things my children said but this one just takes the biscuit.

And they are suggesting they could keep it for mother-in-law threads.

Happy St George's Day.

I don't normally go out for lunch on a Tuesday but a lot of pubs by me are doing half price food so I may be tempted.

At least we have the Flag flying at our Local Town Hall but that is about it, St Georges Day always seem's to be very low key for some reason.sad

sunseeker Tue 23-Apr-13 08:37:29

Should we be making more of this day. The Scots, Welsh and Irish celebrate their patron saints - why don't the English?
