I`m a bit cynical about the statement, seeing as we had a double muder and an attempted murder here in town on Sunday morning.

Maybe webcams are deterring. And the thought criminals can be easily identified these days, through DNA and suchlike.

Exactly - I don't trust any figures that show the government/police in a good light! Lies, damned lies and.......

Aah, but it's not the crime rate - just violent crime. Apparently it's dropping nearly everywhere in the affluent west - except for the USA gun crime figures. Methinks figures are being massaged somewhere.

We've got two threads on, broadly, the same topic again. grin

I've put on the other one that people don't feel that the crime rate is dropping.

"The study credited the falling crime rate to changes in policing, including improved technology, as well as an ageing population, reduced alcohol consumption and the introduction of the minimum wage."

Ageing population! We are all getting too old to be violent criminals!

Not sure about the reduced alcohol comsumption bit, or the introduction of the minimum wage. Surely there will always be people who want more than they have got and don't mind how they get it.

No, you are kind, peace-loving and all round lovely people!

The fall in all kinds of crime is to be welcomed, but I am a bit cynical , as usual. How many people just don't bother to report a theft because they are sure the police will be able to do nothing about it, other than give them a crime number for insurance purposes? And you would need to find a police station that was still open.
Many women do not report sexual assault because they have seen the figures for convictions and the way they could be treated in court.

The fear of crime, particularly amongst old people, has been fuelled by sensationalism in the media. 'No violent crime happened today in this area' does not make a good headline (Well, it would in the Nelson Mail, New Zealand, where 'Man falls off bike - not injured' makes the news!)

I believe that people over 65 are the least likely to be the victims of crime- the largest group of victims consists of young men aged 16-25.

It seems I live in the safest area in the country when it comes to violent crime - Broadland, Norfolk. Does this mean we're all a load of boring old f**ts who can't be bothered to argue?
