Ian Martin, writer of The Thick of It, has come up with a lst of things he's learned by the age of 60. Is there anything to add? I love what he said about being a grandparent.

Thank you for that humm

He was quite aggressive in his delivery, I felt that he was maybe having a bad day when he wrote it.

What I would add to the list is

Don't take life too seriously, in the scheme of things most things we worry about are usually silly things.

We only have today, no guarantees we will have tomorrow

Stay calm as you will get further

And lastly, being nice feels better than being horrible smile

REALLY looking forward to other posts smile

Thank you, Hummingbird - I found myself laughing aloud and saying 'Oh, Yes' to most of his list!
I can't remember what I was like at 60, it is too long ago!

Brilliant! ....especially his comments about the NHS grin

I read this this morning and found it very amusing. Am looking for other stuff of his; I like his style.

I love "A problem shared is all over The Mail on Sunday" and "No news is BBC Breakfast"

I think I might add that there is no such things as bad wine – just some is better than others.

Love it. I especially like, "It is reassuring and comforting to know that after you are dead you will still get spam."

kittylester Tue 30-Apr-13 17:38:05

and, after the first glass, who cares anyway absent wine

Butty Tue 30-Apr-13 18:02:13

Think his first No. 1 says it all. smile

Butty Tue 30-Apr-13 18:03:39

first No. 1 ....... ?? Ooops

I am amazed nobody has chosen,

A beloved old friend is like a comfy pair of slippers. A beloved new friend is like a comfy pair of slippers.

I want to add that reading the drivel in the Guardian item is not obligatory, so I gave up at about no. 18 or 19. I have learnt that it is possible to have the freedom to decide on things like this and not feel that because it is something vaunted by one's peers that one has to read to the bitter end!

Ana Tue 30-Apr-13 18:21:45

Hmm...hmm

I agree with you, Mamie - that's my favourite!

Eloethan Tue 30-Apr-13 18:47:59

I really liked his list, except his dislike of pets. I loved his abiding memory of the happiness he felt during a 10 minute car trip many years ago.

I would add:

That I must remember I'll always be a smoker - even when I'm not.

That power never concedes power graciously.

That talking about "a good innings" after someone's death is often unhelpful.

Greatnan Tue 30-Apr-13 19:07:01

I am chastened by flowerfriend's post. I really enjoyed the article and did not realise that I was only reading it because my 'peers' (who the heck are they?) had made it obligatory. grin

matson Tue 30-Apr-13 19:09:13

I,d like to add " be careful what you wish for "

hummingbird Tue 30-Apr-13 19:37:49

I am chastened, too, Greatnan! Am I your peer, do you think??? Oh, the power...

I immediately thought of Gransnet when I read the less-fewer remark!

If we ignore everything someone adds a link to in case it is trendy, we could miss some gems. We can always stop before the end if it turns out not to be on our wavelength.

Are you trendy, hummingbird ? Or just a standard gran like the rest of us? I don't know you well enough to add a derogatory label. The list in the link was interesting, that is what matters, and I don't doubt that was what made you post it.

Ella46 Tue 30-Apr-13 19:48:56

Makes a change from having a pop at the DM.

Ana Tue 30-Apr-13 19:52:26

Ella! grin

hummingbird Tue 30-Apr-13 20:39:01

Trendy? Sadly not! I liked the list, and it resonated with me as both an older woman (person?) and a gran. That's all, really. smile

absent Tue 30-Apr-13 20:52:08

Bless. Whatever we do, let's avoid drivel.

Greatnan Tue 30-Apr-13 20:55:49

I am bemused. Why would hummingbird have to be trendy to have a good sense of humour?
