Superstition

Funny how those things stick with you! I try to say Gesundheit rather than bless you ..but often fail!

Throwing spilled salt over your shoulder, only one person pouring from the teapot (to avoid conceiving ginger twins!), pinch and punch for the 1st of the month! All nonsense but I do them!

I will never take or pass a knife into another persons hand I always insist that it is placed on a hard surface for them/me to pick up.

I always say "good morning Mr Magpie" or "good morning General" to a solitary Magpie when I see one.

Don't you say "Good morning Mr Magpie and how's your wife?"

I occasionally say Bless you after someone sneezes, but more often (if it's a child), I say Get a hankie.

I also sometimes say touch wood.

I don't think it has anything really to do with superstition for me; they are merely padding figures of speech.

Well, get a hankie isn't.

Keep meaning to say "WHITE RABBIT" first thing on the first morning of the month - never remember, but I am told it is supposed to bring luck.

Spent time with my very superstitious Grandmother so many of her superstitions have been absorbed.
The main problem is when shopping in a large store as I MUST leave by the door thro' which I entered..... goodness knows why!
Magpies, broken mirrors, walking under ladders or on cracks in the pavements, cutting nails/playing cards on a Sunday, bringing may blossom into the house ALL considered bad luck by GM. I think there were more portents of doom BUT she did live to the ripe old age of 97 so wasn't that unlucky!

We say 'Good morning, Mr Magpie, how are your wife and children?' to a solitary magpie.

I touch wood,usually my head, say bless you , won't walk under ladders( common sense),try and be brave on Friday the thirteenth,throw salt over my shoulder when I spill it ,don't like crossing people on the stairs,and won't have red and white flowers together but no I'm not superstitious if you ask me?

My grandmother would never allow an umbrella to be put up in the house, new shoes should never be put on a table, wouldn't allow a baby to see its reflection in a mirror. I don't understand any of these or where they came from - isn't it funny what you remember, I haven't thought about these for years!!

I took a taxi from the airport to Douglas, Isle of Man, and the driver insisted that we should say 'Hello, Fairies' as we drove over the Fairy Bridge, as it would bring bad luck if we didn't. I felt such a twit

I to touch wood, today I returned to find a dead bird in the hallway! the cat had caught it and dragged it in through the cat flap, my mam always panicked if a bird got in the house, she said it was very unlucky!!!!!!!!!! but does it count if the bird is dead? aargh x and the spooky bit was, today was my mam,s birthday and I had just returned from the cemmy !

I put new shoes on the table, umbrellas up in the house to dry, never give a thought to single magpies (which I see quite often) and as my birthday is on 13th and has been on a friday, I class it as a lucky day!

I think dead creatures brought in by the cats aren't as unlucky as half-dead or still alive. Dead creatures you can just scoop and chuck but not-quite-dead are more problematic.......

I think the open umbrella has to be over your head, not just sitting in the utility room to dry, to be unlucky.
