GIG BUDDY WANTED

I'm a Grandmum, live in Sidcup and I am posting this on Gransnet site because I thought it might be a bit safer than going on Gumtree or similar.

IMMEDIATELY - I suddenly have a spare ticket available for ELVIS COSTELLO AND THE IMPOSTERS for TONIGHT 4th June - LONDON ALBERT HALL and rather than let it go to waste wondered if anyone would like it or maybe knows someone who might like to go.

SECOND - I also have a ticket for THE KILLERS on Sat 22 June at Wembley Stadium. My daughter was coming with me to this, but can no longer make it and, sadly, no-one else in my circle is interested in going to see the Killers!! Again, if you or anyone you know would be interested in this, please let me know

LONG-TERM - I very much like concerts - rock, classical - theatre, cinema and whilst I do have family and friends to go with, they're not always available or like what I like. So I would like to make contact with fellow giggers - and particularly rock-loving giggers - who may also like to go to a gig, concert, theatre occasionally and would also like someone to go with.

look forward to hearing from you. For the Elvis Costello concert tonight please reply direct to me for any further questions, arrangements re tickets and so on.

Thank you.

Been a tad busy just lately, hence not visited lately...
Hello rocknanny great to hear from another Killers fan! I'm really looking forward to seeing them tomorrow and in actual fact my friend from Deal is coming to stay for the weekend and will be going to the gig with me, so that will be nice, though I would have gone on my own. I share your comments about the hanging around and bar foray problem, tho' usually get chatting to people who are generally very nice. I just hate the coming home late on my own.
But whenever you are planning to go to a gig rocknanny (or anyone else of course!) please do let me know and I'll go with you if I can, and I'll do the same, if that's OK? Whereabouts do you live? You might find you have less time for gigging once the little newcomer arrives smile (hope all goes well with that when it happens).
Tegan, can't say I do remember that pub - where was it? - I studied/worked in Manchester itself, but lived variously around Fallowfield, West Didsbury before moving to Bramhall.

I love The Killers DottyB! I would love to take you up on your offer but my granddaughter is due to arrive on, or around, 5th July. As I am a birthing partner, along with my Son-in-Law, I know my DD would be very anxious were I to go off to London so close to the due date.

I hardly ever have a gig buddy but I still go to gigs. I find the worse part about being on my own is all the waiting around with no-one I know to chat to and having no-one to take turns to go to the bar with (I usually manage with a drink at the beginning then I chew gum). However, once the music starts I'm focused on that. Also, if I want to try to get a better view I find it easier to sidle into a space when one opens up (I don't push in!). Since I first decided to take the plunge and go to a gig alone I feel my self-confidence has increased significantly and I haven't looked back. It is really nice though when I do manage to find a friend to share the gig experience with.

My most recent concert was last Friday, June 7th. I went to the O2 (my favourite venue) to see Paloma Faith (2nd time seeing her live). I had a great seat, close to the stage and the concert was fantastic! Paloma was wonderful and looked absolutely gorgeous, as always smile!

I lived in Manchester as well, Dotty [do you remember a pub called the Jules Verne?].

Ooh, more lovely interesting stories to catch up on!
whenim64 yes I might check out the fan club route and see if they have forums such as this - good idea. I've also seen Cliff a couple of times. He doesn't really do it for me, but I agree that he puts on a good show.
Tegan I grew up in Spondon, nr Derby and was a very frequent visitor until my Mum passed away in 2011. Still in contact with a couple of old school pals - we are currently trying to arrange a meet in Derby. Ah, Folk Music. There was a boy at Youth Group who was into folk music. He taught me to play guitar (I could just about bash out Homeward Bound!!) and we used to go to, I think, the Railway pub in Derby on a Monday for folk night. After I'd moved to Manchester, had a couple of climber friends in our group with whom we'd go to the Lakes where almost every pub had a folk band playing. I think I might possibly still remember the words to Wild Rover grin!
laidback yes Elvis did sing Shipbuilding, and Roses and Olivers Army - most of the best, I would say.

It's a very small market town but the houses around the Minster are beautiful [all built for the clergy]. Folk music is played in the pubs all year round [Swarbrick plays there a lot]. Much as we love it we always say we wouldn't want to live there as it is in the middle of nowhere and in winter the roads get very icy. We've never visited the Workhouse, either, but we sometimes go racing there. For a posh town it's got a reall gaff track of a racecourse but we love it [they do great fish and chips and have a swwt stall to die for]. We live near Derby but there's no direct way to get to Southwell other than driving round Nottingham. I'd love to go to Cropredy as well. I had a friend who lived on a boat and I kept asking him to take the boat down there so we could stay on it for the Festival, but he wouldn't sad. They sem to be having a few folk events round Bamburgh [a bit closer to you]. The Unthanks played at one of the farms last year and there is talk of it happening again. Watch this space smile. Another band we want to see are Feast of Fiddles. Phil from SOH's plays with them; they only form for a few weeks each year as they're all in other bands, but then tour round the country. Blink and you'll miss them. I'm watching out for next years tour. I think they play at The Maltings at Berwick sometimes.

Nonny Sun 09-Jun-13 11:52:07

No I don't know that part of the country well. I have been to Nottingham many years ago but I live in Scotland now. Southwell looks like an interesting place. Do you live near to it? Would also like a trip to Cropredy.

Tegan Sun 09-Jun-13 11:43:06

I could have seen The Oysterband on Friday and Eliza on Thursday sad. Wish I'd know beforehand. It seems it was streamed live last year also. It was all on the website but I didn't notice. Have you ever been to Southwell, Nonny? It's the most beautiful place. It looks as if there have been some concerts in The Minster as well. And, after the awful weather last year they now have it in a huge marquee [good thinking wink].

Nonny Sun 09-Jun-13 11:35:55

I thought Show of Hands were great. I hope that I get a chance to watch today. I would love to go to Southwell. Perhaps next year.

KatyK Sun 09-Jun-13 11:11:16

Really sad

Tegan Sun 09-Jun-13 11:00:11

I used to live in that part of the world, although it was long before Fishermans Friends became famous. I often wondered if and how fame might change them but never dreamt something like this would happen.

Movedalot Sun 09-Jun-13 10:56:46

Not quite in your league folks but we saw Cliff Richard at Warwick Castle last night. He was much better than on TV last year but it did finish before 10pm, presumably for him and all the other old folks! grin He was never one of my favourites but I do feel I must give him credit for wearing well and doing a good job on stage.

Top marks for Warwick and the castle for organisation. We were in the car and on the road within 20 minutes of the end of the show.

KatyK Sun 09-Jun-13 10:36:00

Theie manager was killed in the same accident but I didn't know about the singer.

KatyK Sun 09-Jun-13 10:32:34

Has the chap from Fisherman's Friends died? I know he had an accident when they were on stage - I think a heavy door collapsed on top of him but I didn't know he had died. We saw them some years ago when we went on holiday to Port Isaac. They weren't famous then, they came down to the beach and started to sing. It was great.

Tegan Sun 09-Jun-13 00:17:13

I thought Show of Hands were on top form tonight. Didn't know about the guy from Fisherman's Friends though; wonder what happened to him? We saw SOH's do an accoustic set at Southwell Minster a couple of years back. Southwell is the only place we know that is so posh the graffiti is in Latin confused. After we'd watched the Morris Dancing today we just wandered around looking at all the beautiful houses and deciding which one we would live in [in our dreams...].

Nonny Sat 08-Jun-13 22:30:10

OOps I meant we like Roddy Woomble. Have now got friends in the US watching too.

Nonny Sat 08-Jun-13 22:06:48

Thanks Tegan - we are watching the Southwell Folk Festival and really enjoying it.We are like Roddy Woomble and his band!

Tegan Sat 08-Jun-13 17:08:49

For anyone that likes folk music, there is live streaming of tonights show at Southwell Folk Festival starting at 7.30 if you go onto their website. Show of Hands are playing.

Movedalot Sat 08-Jun-13 16:49:19

Dotty do you think that joining the various fan clubs might help you meet up with someone like yourself? Perhaps they have forums like this.

KatyK Sat 08-Jun-13 15:17:48

DottyB How wonderful for you, I would have nearly fainted too. Yes those days were fab (to coin a phrase). I have many Beatles tales to tell and have bored my family rigid for years! And also bored the whole of the area as I have been on local radio a couple of times with my stories. I have a photo of the recording of Thank Your Luck Stars with me and a few others sitting right behind the Beatles on stage (well the studio floor). I have had it blown up and framed and it sits proudly in my hallway. There is no escape!

laidback Fri 07-Jun-13 22:26:40

Dotty did Elvis sing 'shipbuilding'....I love that song.

Tegan Fri 07-Jun-13 19:21:09

The Witchmen are going to be there tomorrow!!

petallus Fri 07-Jun-13 19:10:01

I| love Morris Dancing.

Tegan Fri 07-Jun-13 18:45:32

I'm in the Midlands Dotty; must admit that my main love is folk music. We're going to Southwell tomorrow but, alas, not staying for the folk festival, just watching the Morris Dancing through the streets. Show of Hands are playing tomorrow and The Oysterband are on tonight. I would have liked to see the Oysterband again. I'm not sure where and when Neil Young is playing this summer. One of the best gigs I've ever been to was Arcade Fire, but they seem to have slipped off the radar recently. If we do see band it's usually in Nottingham. And Kaiser Chiefs never do a bad show.

DottyB Fri 07-Jun-13 18:18:01

I'm loving all these gig stories - Clapton & King, eh? What a divine combination whenim64. I have many stories to tell, as it's clear a few of you do too. All the better told over a -glass- -bottle- a couple of bottles of wine. Where are you based?
KathyK your Beatles reminiscences really made me chuckle - how mad and what fun, which is just what the 60s were like, weren't they. I can't believe I never actually went to a Beatles concert, but my French penpal and I did see them in North Wales - we (15ish) walking, them in car - and they slowed down, leaned out and waved to us. We nearly fainted!
Laidback Oooh, yes please. Would love to join you occasionally. When you're planning something, do please let me know. And at the risk of repeating myself (sorry), I have a ticket going spare for The Killers, Sat 22 June, Wembley Stadium if you or one of your circle might be interested??
Tegan where are you based? I have a spare bed, you're very welcome to come gigging anytime smile

Tegan Fri 07-Jun-13 07:23:48

envyenvyenvy....
