Just went to Morrison's and spotted signs saying "Stock up for Ramadan". Isn't it supposed to be a period of fasting? hmm
And one outside a pub in N Wales. "OAP Roast, Tuesdays". Surely this bears no relation to a "hog roast" or similar? grin

I think Muslims fast all day and then feast after dusk.

Roasting OAPs only is ageist isn't it? grin

Ana Mon 10-Jun-13 12:47:41

Perhaps they do different age-group Roasts on the other days of the week...

Movedalot Mon 10-Jun-13 12:51:46

Ah, hadn't thought of that! smile

Ramadan in the northern summer must be difficult with such long hours of daylight. A girl who did work experience as a clerk in our college refused even to take an aspirin during daylight hours.

My favourites when I first went to the UK where

'heavy plant crossing' !!!

and two opposite each other near Guildford

'free erection' (they sold sheds) and on the other side 'soft verge' (verge being one of the many words used in French for the male dudah).

My French students loved the one at our local garage 'air con £60'. They would pose behind the sign and pull the worst possible faces, saying they could do it for free. (avoir l'air con = to look like a tw*t).

The most worrying is the one near Cambridge which says 'airport/crematorium) (:

There's a sign as you approach the beach at Druridge Bay in Northumberland which says "Nesting birds take care" smile

Well I think it is just supposed to be eat moderately after dusk Movealot. The feasting, I understand, comes at the end of Ramadan - known as Eid.

There use to be a sign just off the A2 (not sure if it's still there), which said "sign not in use"!

Wiki says: "Over time, iftar has grown into banquet festivals. This is a time of fellowship with families, friends and surrounding communities, but may also occupy larger spaces at masjid or banquet halls for 100 or more diners."

A sign in our local shopping mall says "you can change your little ones here". I wonder how many harassed moms take advantage of this?

shysal Mon 10-Jun-13 15:38:27

I always smile at 'Heavy Plant Crossing', I wonder what the plant looks like, I always picture a Gunnera or Little Shop of Horrors monster.

shysal Mon 10-Jun-13 15:41:17

I once came across a 'Do Not Speed, Pheasants' notice on a track. I wonder if they complied!

I once saw a picture taken on the Scottish island of Benbecula, it was at the side of a road, and said "Otter crossing".

annodomini Mon 10-Jun-13 16:01:44

'SLOW Children crossing'.
Well, someone should tell them to get a move on!

MrsEggy Mon 10-Jun-13 17:47:40

Our local shopping mall has a sign "you can change your little ones here"
I wonder if anyone has been tempted?

Sign on the wall in a Maltese shop "In God we trust - all others pay cash"

Mishap Mon 10-Jun-13 17:57:01

On the wall of a public convenience which happened to be in a car park.

Toilets
Pay and Display

JessM Mon 10-Jun-13 18:46:14

Yes, "Baby changing area" too - I always imagine people who have got babies who scream all night and dribble all day might be tempted to trade them in for a placid one that gets through fewer bibs.

granjura Mon 10-Jun-13 19:26:31

I always told our girls that one April Fool Day I would dress up as a huge plant and go a-bounding across the road by one of those signs - but I never did (yet smile )

annodomini Mon 10-Jun-13 19:36:38

A triffid, granjura?

At the tennis courts located next to the crematorium there used to be a notice saying "Ashes wanted".

Sook Mon 10-Jun-13 20:05:52

Well they say "An English mans home is his castle". In our village there is a house which has been undergoing renovations for several years, on the wall there is a plaque which reads

The inner wall of the castle is dangerous, it is closed to the public during repairs.

It is fun watching passers by craning their necks to read itgrin

At the entrance to Albert Dock in Liverpool, back in the days when it was a proper dock, there was a sign:

COMMIT NO NUISANCE.

Seen in Auckland at the time of the horse meat scandal:

"NEW HORSE TAKEAWAY"
Customer Parking
