World's Largest 'Ex-Gay' Ministry Shuts Down, Issues Incredible Apology | The Atheism News Magazine

:: Exodus International, the world's oldest and largest "ex-gay" Christian ministry announced late yesterday that it would be shutting down for good after nearly 40 year of claiming to have a cure for homosexuality. In a stunning apology letter to the LGBTQ community, Exodus president Alan Chambers said he was "deeply sorry" for the "pain and hurt" he, his organization, and the Church in general have inflicted on many people over the years. In a statement concerning the decision to shutter Exodus effective immediately, Chambers said his group has "been imprisoned in a worldview that’s neither honoring toward our fellow human beings, nor biblical."

Ariadne Thanks grin

Of course, homophobia (such a silly word) is not a disease or medical condition so "curing" isn't exactly the practice. However, clearly, people with entrenched positions (is that a familiar subject?) are apparently capable of eventually recognising that they have been wrong all along. That has to be a good thing.

Just a bit of a play on words, absent, as this bunch have been claiming to cure homosexuality for a long time! I know you didn't think that I thought it was a medical condition!

Yes it IS a silly word - 'a morbid fear of the same' - means nothing, really...

Aka Sun 23-Jun-13 09:21:56

Ignorance and bigotry capable of being 'cured'? When 'hurray' for this particular example smile

Greatnan Sun 23-Jun-13 14:02:51

Perhaps if my casual choice of word causes problems, somebody can change them! Does it really matter? Does it invalidate the whole thread?

Greatnan Sun 23-Jun-13 14:04:03

On second thoughts, perhaps 'a morbid fear of homosexuality' is exactly what drove these bigots!

Shite me! he's gay himself!

Movedalot Sun 23-Jun-13 14:11:10

I saw on Fb a couple of days ago "if you don't like homosexuality blame the heterosexuals because they are the ones which keep producing them!"

j08 Sun 23-Jun-13 14:12:15

Sorry for expletive there

Greatnan Sun 23-Jun-13 14:14:32

I wonder if some men get very upset if their sons are gay because they fear people will think it is hereditary? I know several homosexual men and most say their mothers were able to accept it much more easily than their fathers.

Quite happy with the word 'cured' .. We all know what is meant

Interestingly i work with a regional LGBT group, and at a recent training session they explained that some gay people have grown up in an environment with anti gay attitudes, and so internalize the self hatred, refusing to acknowledge that they are Gay, and becoming very homophobic in attitude. A blind survey was carried out, using equipment to measure straight mens arousal when watching porn - all men got aroused watching M- F, F- F, but only those that had displayed overtly anti- gay and homophobic views got aroused watching M-M

Next time yrou hear such views -ask yourself, do they protect too much?

absent Sun 23-Jun-13 20:11:14

Yes, of course I know what Greatnan meant and appreciated her play on words, especially as it was signalled with quotation marks. hmm
