Andy Murray forgot his mum

With all the sad son/daughter relationship problems I read about on here (including my own), was it wrong of me to take some small comfort from the fact that Andy Murray forgot his mom when hugging friends and family after his win? My thought was - it's not just me then ! Obviously he was overcome, but she's been there throughout it all - felt a bit sorry for her.

That thing about chips on shoulders was really interesting!! "The things you learn on GN" (could almost be the title of a thread!!)

nanaej Wed 10-Jul-13 12:33:43

Interesting..I hope I need to use that info sometime..I might impress someonegrin We have a lot of dictionaries for various things, e.g. slang, Phrase & Fable etc. DH can read and retain info.. I can read, find info interesting but often fail to retain!

The sort of thing Susie Dent explains on Countdown!

Apologies for the diversion blush

Oh, it's OK, Google was my friend.

Didn't read yesterday's donations to this thread. Have just read them. Well, well. Chips on shoulders comes to mind in some quarters.

Can someone please explain that expression to me? I suppose it really means a chip off a shoulder, or does it mean someone is carrying a heavy log and getting bad-tempered with the world because of it?

I do the same with Scrabble words the computer comes up with – look up their meanings and promptly forget them – but it helps at the time smile

Stansgran now you have the link from feetlebaum I'm expecting great things from you grin

I love my Kindle for the instant link to a dictionary for any word I don't know. Most likely I'll forget the meaning but it makes me feel I'm improving my mind.

stansgran When on the laptop I just open another window to look up unknown words then pop back to the original window I am using. When doing crosswords in the paper I always use the OED or Chambers! A mixed economy!

That's my weight bearing exercise done for today anyway -who needs to go to the gym? grin

Ana Wed 10-Jul-13 11:33:11

Well, I did say 'most'...

Perhaps I should have said 'some'.

gracesmum Wed 10-Jul-13 11:29:50

Not necessarily, Ana - OED in the study usually.

feetlebaum Wed 10-Jul-13 11:11:07

This is useful Stansgran - bookmark it: www.onelook.com

Has loads of dictionaries and looks your word up in all of them!

Ana Wed 10-Jul-13 10:48:20

I think most of us look up the meaning of unknown words online, Stansgran.

Stansgran Wed 10-Jul-13 10:42:50

How do people look up a word find an alternative and pop back on to type screeds? Are you all pitmans starred pupils? How do you do it? I haven't got as far as the bookcase yet. I think I agree with everyone so far .

nanaej Wed 10-Jul-13 10:41:08

I agree there are a lot of random comments that have no apparent link to the OP but not sure if that counts as apophenia. Or deserving are you suggesting that the personal sniping that goes on on a variety of threads appear random but in fact are predictable as they follow a pattern?

Stansgran Wed 10-Jul-13 10:39:00

Help

gracesmum Wed 10-Jul-13 10:28:43

I don't think mixed singles is yet a possibility although I understand Serena Williams and Andy Murray are planning a match in Vegas.

As to opinions being seen as relevant - they seem to be discussed/agreed with/dismissed in equal measure.
PS apologies if I am being picky - what do you mean by apophenia? Did you mean apopthegm?

whenim64 Wed 10-Jul-13 10:27:50

Bit of projection onto others going on?

nanaej Wed 10-Jul-13 10:24:16

I grasped the point!!

annodomini Wed 10-Jul-13 10:24:04

Now, i assume that we have all, by now, looked up the meaning of apophenia and are wondering how on earth it fits the context of what D is saying. Nuff said. I give up.

deserving Wed 10-Jul-13 10:12:54

GN I wouldn't have thought you would have had difficulty understanding, not trying to have me barred are you? (and to help, I don't mean marked with stripes)
I referred to an interpretation of the word, jaundiced, or more correctly, so that some will not get even more confused, several meanings associated with the word.
Well done Nonu, you seem to have grasped the point.Seems that only opinions that coincide with those opined by the regulars are considered relevant,as was said,I pop up now and then to see if any progress has been made with the quality, and to see how bumptious some can get when on "high horses".do not wish to discombobulate those that bother to read what is said, but often it seems that apophenia takes over.
We all have opinions, some are best kept to ourselves, commenting on others opinions rather than the subject is apparently still more edifying to the old stagers.
As has been touched on,probably without realising, SPORT, is a business, its a money making racket, (no pun intended} we seem to thing winning is the only reason for existence, I would have liked to see a match between mother Teressa and perhaps Ghandi, where a handful of rice was NOT involved.

annodomini Tue 09-Jul-13 21:46:52

I thought some of the barbs were directed at me. Not that it bothers me. hmm
