Headline in The Daily Mail:
The death of the man who sunk the Belgrano: Falklands Navy hero Sir John 'Sandy' Woodward dies aged 81

Who has the nerve to ask,"relevance" on this net. Have you seen the other posts?
If relevance is necessary, it was a headline, not necessarily of the great importance of the one that started this thread, of sink sank sunk, fame, but rather amusing, I think, (that in itself should start another small war). Another, at the time, if my memory serves me was, "Explorer Fuchs off to the pole".
Many of these headlines can be quite clever and amusing, I don't think we should take them too seriously with regard to good grammar.
The journalists concerned are more concerned with appearing amusing than observing the niceties some of us seem to expect, or perhaps demand.
Nowadays if you get the gist, that seems to be enough, no time to waste on the niceties, pandering to elderly ladies.

I never groan! It is very unladylike.
I might utter a VERY FAINT moan!

Elegran Sat 10-Aug-13 19:01:24

I thought that was a groan.

Galen Sat 10-Aug-13 18:54:21

Oh not the dreaded [gron] again. I meant grin

Galen Sat 10-Aug-13 18:53:47

[gron]

Ana Sat 10-Aug-13 18:51:32

Oh! Must have been thinking of Orca! grin

Galen Sat 10-Aug-13 18:49:46

Hang on! We were on dry land til now! Where did flatfish come from?

Ana Sat 10-Aug-13 18:47:23

I agree, Elegran. Floundering a bit, I thought.

Elegran Sat 10-Aug-13 18:26:12

I remembered about Vivien Fuchs. Did not quite see the relevance though, a bit laboured as a pun. I would expect better wordplay from deserving.

Galen Sat 10-Aug-13 18:01:48

Great minds Nelliesunshine

Nelliemoser Sat 10-Aug-13 17:46:51

We crossed there Galen

Nelliemoser Sat 10-Aug-13 17:45:56

Well it was a sort of joke, by means of pun on the guy's surname and the activity he was involved in. There were other puns flying about!

Galen Sat 10-Aug-13 17:45:00

I think it was meant to be some sort of pun FFF?

Nonu Sat 10-Aug-13 17:40:32

Above for deserving , by the way !!

Nonu Sat 10-Aug-13 17:39:07

I remember the name Vivien Fuchs , but why do you suddenly bring that out of the blue ?IAlthough some of your posts are a bit Jejune. If I may be so bold !!!

I do quite like them however .

Galen Sat 10-Aug-13 17:36:14

Relevance?

gracesmum Sat 10-Aug-13 17:35:37

And who says Gransnet isn't educational? grin

Nelliemoser Sat 10-Aug-13 17:29:34

Sir Vivian Ernest Fuchs FRS[1] (11 February 1908 – 11 November 1999) was an English explorer whose expeditionary team completed the first overland crossing of Antarctica in 1958.

I recognised the surname and the polar bit and I can now remember the news items. The details came from Wikipedia

Elegran Sat 10-Aug-13 17:04:53

Who, deserving? and why? Or was that "just a joke"? If so could you explain it, I don't understand. It reads more like a random shock-producer.

Galen Sat 10-Aug-13 16:58:19

Pardon?

deserving Sat 10-Aug-13 16:30:51

Remain at the pole for Fuchs sake.

Ariadne Fri 09-Aug-13 20:40:44

Yes, but what larks, Pip!

Galen Fri 09-Aug-13 17:11:46

What us?

Nelliemoser Fri 09-Aug-13 17:05:28

Now come on! You are all being very silly! wink grin grin grin

Elegran Fri 09-Aug-13 16:27:24

Groan.
