Headline in The Daily Mail:
The death of the man who sunk the Belgrano: Falklands Navy hero Sir John 'Sandy' Woodward dies aged 81

absent Tue 06-Aug-13 09:01:40

Perhaps it sank in the Atlantic.

absentgrin

There is a butcher's shop in our village which is for sale as a going concern but is, currently, only being ran part-time!

j08 Tue 06-Aug-13 09:14:37

My God! Is that all you can comment on between yourselves in that headline? The grammar? hmm #littleminds

Elegran Tue 06-Aug-13 09:18:31

Well, the subject of the headline is "Grammar". WYSIWYG.

j08 Tue 06-Aug-13 09:28:12

confused The headline is about the death of Sandy Woodward.

(Don't know what those letters stand for)

kittylester Tue 06-Aug-13 09:35:23

What you see is what you get jingl - we have missed you! grin

The heading is about grammar, not the death of Sandy Woodward, but you could start another one about his demise.

Elegran Tue 06-Aug-13 09:37:39

The subject of this thread is about grammar, though. If you want to comment on the death of Sandy Woodward, that could have a different title.

WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get, or that is what it says on the tin.

Elegran Tue 06-Aug-13 09:37:57

Snap.

Ana Tue 06-Aug-13 09:38:05

jingl's right, the headline is about the death of Sandy Woodward!

The title of the thread is concerned with Grammar...

Ana Tue 06-Aug-13 09:38:36

Crossed posts!

Elegran Tue 06-Aug-13 09:39:24

OK! My mistake, I typed Headline where I should have typed Title.

KatyK Tue 06-Aug-13 09:41:05

There is a sign outside our local florists 'we cater for funeral's, wedding's
etc'. It is written in chalk and it takes all my willpower not to rub out the apostrophes.

Ana Tue 06-Aug-13 09:41:21

Think I thought I was in pedants' corner! wink

kittylester Tue 06-Aug-13 09:42:14

We knew what you meant Elegran smile

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 10:31:10

The pedants' corner of the Chat Forum, ana? There! Sorted grin

I am just surprised that anyone would bother with anything so trivial when the main subject is what it is. Whatever your feelings about the sinking (is it really something to joke about?), the man was a war hero.

Hence the hashtag.

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 10:41:22

Coming from some who has never hmm trivialised a serious thread, that's priceless, jings! grin

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 10:41:45

Thanks for the laugh.

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 11:38:51

Oh, I did enjoy that, jings! Chuckled my way through some ironing and some vacuuming on the strength of it.Thank you again grin

j08 Tue 06-Aug-13 11:41:41

Ok! Point me to a serious thread I have trivialized. I'm fed up with these accusations.

#moneywheremouthis

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 12:54:53

I'm not sure I could, jings, without a great deal of detective work which I don't want to do, and I'm pretty certain I shouldn't even if I wanted to.

Sorry if my comments bothered you. I wasn't complaining about your flippant remarks. Mostly I find them amusing and can see where you're coming from, even if they take me aback rather.

I'm not complaining. No, I just felt you were one of the last people I'd expect to criticise others for making trivial remarks, or for commenting on trivial things since, from my perspective anyway (which may be completely wrong, I grant you), you do both those things quite often.

So I really did enjoy the irony (as I saw it) this morning smile

j08 Tue 06-Aug-13 13:01:50

There's trivial, and there's trivial.

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 13:09:43

Indeed. And different people will judge triviality in different ways. If one person has to make allowances for another, that goes the other way too. Nobody's perfect.
