What happened to English grammar?

Headline in The Daily Mail:
The death of the man who sunk the Belgrano: Falklands Navy hero Sir John 'Sandy' Woodward dies aged 81

As said, it is sad that you can't see that, although you did not mean any harm, and were indeed talking about grammar- if someone has been involved in that war or that event, or have lost relatives in said event, it could be hugely hurtful, irrespective of the intent of the thread.

I would make that comment to anyone, absolutely, and will leave it at that.

But I do wish you would take an honest look at it, and try to imagine it with other words and case, which, irrespective of the intent of the poster, could have touched and hurt you deeply. Thanks.

I knew that really, Jane! wink

janeainsworth Tue 06-Aug-13 19:42:32

Neither Ana
Envious of being air-lifted off a mountain by an RAF Rescue helicopter pilot grin

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 19:39:02

Perhaps she did. Who cares. She's wrong on either count, as she knows full well.

Ana Tue 06-Aug-13 19:37:51

Oh, I thought jingl meant emotionally thick....

Butty Tue 06-Aug-13 19:35:55

My brain's been scuttled!

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 19:34:16

You have made my day chucklesome, jings grin grin

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 19:33:25

Glad we're agreed, jings dahling.

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 19:32:51

Mr Bags thinks it means what I think it means too (the thick thing). You should have seen his face when he asked: "And someone thinks you're unintelligent?"

Oh no! says I. She just throws words about. It doesn't mean anything.

j08 Tue 06-Aug-13 19:30:49

I shouldn't have said "thick as two short planks". Was getting a bit steamed up.

And Greatnan is not a hawk or an eagle. Waiting to swoop.

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 19:30:10

The OP is about the misuse of the word "sunk". It is impossible for that to be insensitive.

Greatnan Tue 06-Aug-13 19:29:36

For the avoidance of doubt - I was not joking, I was not talking about the death of this man. I was talking about bad grammar. I won't be responding to any more ridiculous accusations of being insensitive.

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 19:26:44

Didn't she, ana? I always thought "thick as two short planks" meant unintelligent. Not that I care what jings thinks I am, as you might have noticed.

granjura Tue 06-Aug-13 19:23:46

I am sure you are sincere in what you say GN- but I could make up a sentence with exactly the same lack of syntax and grammatical error- which I am sure you would find totally insensitive, irrespective of the fact it was meant to be about grammar. I am surprised you can't see this, really and truly. The death of a close one is rarely a good joke... even if you are talking about the grammar, surely?

I'd have made the same comment totally irrespective of the poster-and has nothing to do with a personal attack.

Ana Tue 06-Aug-13 19:22:49

But then, would you have sunk it or sank it....? confused

Bags Tue 06-Aug-13 19:21:59

galen, grin. Just got as far as your post. I noticed that I shopped the first ship but not the second. You might sink a shop you were angry with, mightn't you? Figuratively speaking.

Ana Tue 06-Aug-13 19:21:44

Oh I see, you were referring back to your #

Oh well, what I said still applies! grin

j08 Tue 06-Aug-13 19:18:51

No! I didn't mean to refer to your post Ana. grin

#roundincircles grin

Ana Tue 06-Aug-13 19:15:57

No, I was just quoting Bags herself, jngl. I know you didn't mean thick as in unintelligent...smile

j08 Tue 06-Aug-13 19:14:53

......shakes head and gives up.....

Greatnan Tue 06-Aug-13 19:11:32

Apparently, any kind of subject matter could be upsetting for some member, so perhaps we should all stop posting!
Why on earth should an innocent thread about bad grammar from a newspaper give rise to this kind of comment?hmm

j08 Tue 06-Aug-13 19:07:00

Thick wasn't the right word. Not in the sense of brain thickness.

Ana Tue 06-Aug-13 19:02:20

Envious of Bags being transparentaswellasthick Jane, or talented? grin

Elegran Tue 06-Aug-13 19:01:49

I do like these threads that have several conversations all going on at once!

Elegran Tue 06-Aug-13 19:00:45

Well, J08 people who live in glass houses calling kettles black are already confused so throwing stones at pots could be a shattering experience for them! grin
