I suppose one problem has been the need to marry a "suitable" partner. Couple suitability with with a willingness to cope with the goldfish bowl existance and you're really beginning to look for the impossible. Camilla wasn't suitable for Charles, Koo Stark wasn't suitable for Andrew, Mark Phillips couldn't hack being a Royal and Chelsey Davey left Harry for the same reason. If Edward and Sophie can make it work in their own way that's probably as good as it gets.

The children of the Queen do not seem to have much "luck" in the way of relationships, all having experienced divorce with the exception of Edward & Sophie, and a recent account that I read mentioned their relationship as being more like sister and brother

I think it would make sense. They are neither of them getting any younger and they've got a lot of shared past. They've always seemed to have a better relationship than a lot of married couples.
