IMO there is no great merit in Scotland Yard launching an investigation into new claims that she murdered by a member of the British military.
It will not bring her back !
Hmm!

GillY , it sure as heck would not be Carole ! grin

gillybob, There is no doubt that if Diana had lived she would be number one grandmother but if she had lived, we could be looking at an entirely different set of circumstances.

William might not have gone to St. Andrews, might not have met Kate and if he had, would Kate have wanted to be in constant comparison to a needy mother-in-law? William might not have a child (yet) and Charles would, almost certainly, not be married to Camilla.

I was not a Diana fan and she was definitely a loose cannon. While she might have cheerfully indulged in winding up Charles I don't think she would have deliberately done anything to discredit the Royal family of which her son would one day be head.

I have to agree with your there Nonu Diana would have definitely been the number one although it would have been funny to see them trying to out- glamourise each other!

Isn't fate a funny thing? we can all look at our lives and wonder what might have been if this or that hadn't happened. I agree merlot that William and Kate might never have met had Diana still been alive but I don't think Diana would have been a "needy mother in law". I think she would have made a lovely, down to earth grandma who doted on her grandchildren as she did her children. Love the thought that she might have "wound Charles up" he could have done with a bit "winding".

Listen to me bleating on like a give a damn. grin

I like your 2nd paragraph Gilly smile

What could her being the mother of the second in line have to do with her marrying a muslim? She was divorced, her children were teenagers and very unlikely to change their religion for her sake and anyway she had previously been in a much more stable and long-lasting relationship with a muslim doctor. I cannot remember anyone being worried about that.

I think all these conspiracy theories, whether about the death of the Kennedy brothers, Princess Diana or any other famous person are just bosh and thought up by gullible people who spend to much time reading sensationalist literature.

Greatnan Fri 23-Aug-13 16:06:45

I have some doubts about the deaths in which the Kennedys were involved - Mary Jo Kopechne and Marilyn Monroe. And did Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby really act alone? How fortuitous that Ruby was dying of cancer.

petallus Fri 23-Aug-13 17:13:50

I've always thought that those who believe the official version of things are the gullible ones.

j08 Fri 23-Aug-13 17:25:07

I think it's quite funny that the Gransnetters who profess not to give a flying fig for the Royal family, are the ones keeping this thread going. grin

j08 Fri 23-Aug-13 17:27:46

I don't see why William would not have gone to St Andrews and met Kate if Diana was alive. And I think Kate would still have turned to her mum as number one granny.

merlotgran Fri 23-Aug-13 17:39:45

jingle, He might not have gone to St. Andrews etc. All sorts of different paths could have been taken if Diana hadn't died.

Carole Middleton v Princess Diana? Now that would be entertaining.

nightowl Fri 23-Aug-13 17:49:07

I'm backing Diana in that battle all the way. There is no way in a million years she would have allowed any woman to upstage her at anything. But I agree it would have been fun to watch.

j08 Fri 23-Aug-13 17:50:07

Diana would have been busy living the high life somewhere hot and sunny. She would have known her limitations as an ex-royal.

Nonu Fri 23-Aug-13 18:23:05

Nightowl --Right On the money !wink

absent Fri 23-Aug-13 19:56:26

FlicketyB I think he was a Hindu surgeon not a Muslim and that is why he wouldn't ask her to marry him.

merlotgran Fri 23-Aug-13 20:08:25

I wouldn't have called her relationship with Hasnat Khan stable and long-lasting. I think Diana was very influenced by Jemima Goldsmith's marriage to Imran Khan and wanted the something similar for herself. Diana is supposed to have ended the relationship but I think her fling with Dodi Fayed was an attempt to get Hasnat Khan back.

FlicketyB Fri 23-Aug-13 20:13:32

Absent, I checked. He is a muslim from a Pashtun family in Pakistan and is a distant cousin of Imran Khan, the cricketer turned politician in that country.

absent Fri 23-Aug-13 21:39:21

Apologies FlicketyB. I did say "I think". I suppose I should have checked not relied on my unreliable memory.

absent Fri 23-Aug-13 21:41:42

I wonder how a menopausal 50 something Diana, who might or might not have become less neurotic with the years, would have coped with being upstaged by a 30 something Kate? And in the current youth culture, sjhe would have been.

merlotgran Fri 23-Aug-13 22:11:32

There was a moment at the end of The White Queen where Margaret Beaufort makes her two faced husband stay on his knees because she is now the mother of the King.

I wonder what made me think of Diana? hmm

#gettingherownback

merlotgran Fri 23-Aug-13 22:13:54

Not that she'd have been able to do that to Charles but I think she would always have been a handful.

gillybob Fri 23-Aug-13 23:08:16

So many posts, so little time.......

Dodi al Fayed was most definitely a Muslim. I don't think the queen would have been able to stand the fact that that Diana ( who lets not forget was still a very young woman) could have gone on to have children, who would effectively be a half brother or sister to the second in line to the throne.

How cruel is fate to deny us the privilege of just seeing her prune face pretending that " one is happy for them" NOT.

I don't think that's fair Absent I am in the first throws of the menopause and I am no more bloody neurotic than I have always bloody well been, so just leave it okay...... grin

janeainsworth Fri 23-Aug-13 23:12:37

Gilly grin

merlotgran Fri 23-Aug-13 23:28:07

gillybob, It wouldn't have mattered if Diana had had a baby by a Martian. It would not have been in the line of succession so of no consequence.

Lilygran Sat 24-Aug-13 08:50:21

gillybob why do you dislike the Queen so much?

gillybob Sat 24-Aug-13 09:09:06

I don't dislike the queen Lilygran I don't know her.
