Did you know that the bird name Wheatear has nothing to do with wheat or ears but is a corruption of white and arse, one of the wheatear's most noticeable features?

Oh yes,a beautiful bird finone of my favs.We don't get them oop North unfortunately.
Now wouldn't it have been nice to post the actual picture instead of that link?

Love the link for the hoopoe fin, we have a collection of wooden engravings (circa 1850-1900) and one of them is of a hoopoe, and only prints in black and white, so it was good to see it in all its glory. I believe they make a terrible noise - do they?

Here's a link to the Hoopoe call. It's one of those calls that captures my attention, but then just goes on, and on and on and on......! Their nests are very scruffy affairs.

Poppi Posting photos would be a great idea. I'd need to figure out how to do that if this idea of a forum has legs, and if HQ think it's a good idea. Lots of if's! Meanwhile, we'll have to stick to links I guess.
I suppose one could say that photos have gone into the 'Pictures' Forum to make it easier for HQ.

(I hope they're reading this).

This thread was only started on Tuesday, and look at all the interest! Surely it needs a proper place. Loved the Barn Owl Poppikok
